Pros
Great science. Interesting seminars. Great core facilities and building in general. Nice people. Have access to UCSF's excellent career center.
Cons
Lacks the flexibility of academia and the pay of industry. The upper level management appear to be receptive to change, but change takes a minimum of 6 months to a year- this bureaucratic set up hinders progress. Benefits are minimal, but are touted as excellent. Many "benefits"/policies are the minimum required by CA law. Postdocs are still called "trainees" but are the work horses of Gladstone. Postdocs are told that there is only room for minimal salary increases, but all PIs seem to be hiring, therefore, there is clearly extra money around. In general, there is no personal reward for fellowships. Most people have very long commutes or spend over $3k/month on rent. Postdocs need to be aware that they will neither be able to support their families, or save any money, during their tenure at Gladstone.
