Fascinating place, amazing research, lots of ego, poor management

Pros

Location (SF's booming Mission Bay). Flex hours. Super-smart scientists. Generally a very friendly atmosphere. Beautiful building. Good benefits package, including the week between Christmas and New Year's off with pay--for all staff.

Cons

This and that scientist with an ego the size of Montana who are condescending, rude and entitled. Thankfully they're the exception rather than the rule, but as with any place, a few rotten apples can ruin the barrel. Some nightmarish managers.

Very busy schedule, at work weekends and holidays, extended hours, high pressure, competitive field, low compensation, hazardous risks, animal work

Great science, bad leadership

Pros

The company has really smart people doing great science. It's a small, but growing, organization, so it feels like family. They offer great benefits, especially for a non-profit organization.

Cons

The leadership is very hierarchical, and there is a huge lack of transparency. The president doesn't know how to lead the organization, especially the administration. Employees don't feel valued, and there is no room to move up in the company.
