Pros

I enjoyed working at Gladstone. The facilities are top notch and the ability to access other amenities through UCSF is unique.

Cons

I was a UCSF graduate student there but I feel that Gladstone, in general, is a little bit more geared towards post docs and staff scientists. That said, it varies lab to lab and there were a ton of great graduate student-heavy labs there.

Pros

The environment of the institute is great. The HR staff is wonderful and supportive.

Cons

San Francisco is the mot expensive city in the USA. There are very few spaces in schools and your child can get placed anywhere in the city, without you having a choice at all. I had to home-school, because there was no space in public schools, aside form one school, rated 1/10 (the worst), in a high crime area. People rather move than to send their children there. 2-bedroom apartment is about $4000 per month. Most people commute long distances.

Pros

Great learning environment with brilliant scientists. Mission Bay is a great location and easily accessible via bike, car or public transportation.

Cons

It is still considered working in academia, therefore the pay is not as high as in industry. However, this is greatly outweighed by the freedom and support they provide.
