Pros

This is a thriving and forward thinking company not afraid to take the steps to survive in a changing business environment. While a lot of other retailers cling to their catalogs, Grainger embraced online shopping even to the point of cannibalizing their own books. It is a strategy that works.

Cons

Such a big company gets very small with "little chieftens" allowed to run their little empires. Leadership doesn't have the time or care to reign in this layer of insulated bureaucrats and, unfortunately, in some cases abusive bosses. While it is clear that people on the same level as these offenders recognize the patterns of favoritism and abuse as they are repeated over and over by the worst, very sick offenders, they admit they fear for their own jobs and while privately sympathizing with victims, don't do anything.

Pros

Mon-Fri 9-5 is good. The pay is ok compared to working in a similar place like a Home Depot or Lowes. Two week vaction in first year even for new hire.

Cons

You will never move up in the company if you aren't a brown noser and if you aren't in the "in crowd". Be prepared to do your job and twenty other things at the same time, then get "coached" when it isn't done in 20 minutes. This will be happening all while the "chosen" few are laughing and talking about their day and drinking coffe from dunkin doughnuts. Just a bad place to be if you aren't in the chosen group, look for another job while you are there and dont think about a transfer because Grainger managment is all the same you will go through the same thing everywhere you go.

Pros

Good benefits overall, stable organization, profit sharing, smart organization.

Cons

Management skill level is painfully inconsistent. Career advancement (or lack thereof) is often determined by ones manager as opposed to an employee's ability or work ethic. Many employee talents are never realized by the company because manager's have the ability to hold employee's back. Favoritism seems to be given to white male employees. Although recent diversity efforts have been launched, the historic culture is impossible to change if the same people are in positions of authority. Managers in International tend to be intimidated by intelligence and ability and seem to work to sabotage employee efforts. Many Baby boomers are shackled by years of experience. If these managers are not willing to adapt to change, they need to move on and make way for innovative risk takers! There have been recent changes but radical efforts need to be made to rid Grainger of it's "Good ole Boy" mentality.
