Pros

I had several amazing managers at Grainger and my experience with getting development opportunities and promotions was incredible. The company has phenomenal training programs and lots of opportunity (if you have a good manager) to challenge yourself. Compensation was decent and benefits (health, dental) were actually great.

Cons

Constant organizational changes and mass layoffs. This company has been cost cutting aggressively for the past four years and shows no signs of stopping. No respect for people. Do not expect job security at Grainger. Top level management making poor investment choices (Gamut.com for example) and further confusing the brand and pricing for customers. Grainger does not have a bright future and I expect more mass layoffs in the coming years.

Pros

Profit Sharing, PTO are good. Flexibility, although that is diminishing. Largest in the industry, which does open doors.

Cons

Management has becoming way too enamored with Salesforce.com and measures every metric available to determine if you're performing or not. Goals for sellers are ridiculous YOY and force too many top performers to walk away. Can't make great money consistently, but that's what management wants. No trust in sellers to make rational pricing decisions, have to jump through way too many hoops to get things done, when competition is nimble and quick moving. Management is becoming more and more micromanaging. Sales leaders come from outside of sales channels and think they know how to run a sales organization. When employees offer suggestions to improve, they are labeled as complainers and not wanting to do things "the Grainger way".

Pros

Lots of good people trying to make a difference on an individual performance basis. Good training Opportunities to advance Good products Respected positive reputation

Cons

EXTREMELY SLOOOOWWW moving company. Everything seems to take forever to get approved and complete. Very little local decision making authority. Too many emails, phones calls, forms, meetings, conference calls, etc. to get anything done. Goals and compensation: OMG - the most frustrating, random, sales goals and commission structure. Goals seem to be set so only about 30% of Account Managers can achieve their goal - and thereby earn their target salary.
