Pros

Excellent benefit package compared with other companies that I've been around. Granite also seems to see the value in giving it's employees the latest technology to do their jobs. Company vehicles are almost always well maintained and relatively new. It's easy to build up a lot of vacation since you're so busy all the time, but when the time comes that you need to take some time away from the job management seems mostly supportive. My experiences were very positive with the HCD division, but I cannot say the same for the Branch division. I was not around them that much but the little bit that I was around them left me with a bad taste in my mouth

Cons

Don't plan on getting a promotion anytime soon, Granite appears to be downsizing the company. The major reorganization seems to be failing, and people are leaving the company at a fast rate. Branch management seems to have no interest in keeping former HCD employees around. If you like large projects, and cutting edge construction, look somewhere else, because Granite is now more of a "pickup truck" contractor, only interested in competing with Mom and Pop contractors to pave a parking lot, and nothing more. If you're looking for an exciting challenging career in civil engineering, look to a company that is not afraid to build large work.

Pros

The company name is well recognized. The training program and level of responsibility given to new engineers is the best in the industry. I do not recommend anyone entering the heavy construction industry without working for Granite for a few years. The procedures, methods and knowledge are standards of the industry. Most all of the best engineers in the heavy construction industry start at Granite. Another good reason to work for Granite is it is not headquartered in Nebraska, where another company that dwarfs this one in downsides resides.

Cons

After the first couple years it stops being fun. Promotion and bonus are arbitrary, many employees are burned-out, work evasive and experts at deflecting blame, even when not warranted. Some have described employement as belonging to a strange cult, but only say it quietly at the water cooler when no-one else is around for fear of retribution.

Pros

Can't think of any pros

Cons

- work life balance is terrible, lots of travel - Extreme favouritism, especially of those in high positions or management. Expect to never be acknowledged for a job well done, the kudos will always go to the click. - Managers often were gossipy, childish, disrespectful, condescending, and unprofessional. - expect to be treated like an admin no matter your title, and expect to have to kiss admins rears to simply book a room for a meeting - the culture was more like a "good 'ole boys" club than a diversified team. By the way if you are white, expect to be told often you are trash and entitled no matter your background.
