Pros

The company culture at GSG is outstanding, and everyone is tremendously helpful. I was constantly blown away by the skill, intelligence, and dedication of my coworkers. The work environment is relaxed, and I felt motivated to do my best instead of pressure to pump out work by a certain deadline. It was also easy to see that GSG genuinely cares about employees.

Cons

There's a lot to learn, so you're bound to feel lost at times. That can create some stress, but the great support structure is really helpful here.

Pros

While working here I met a ton of amazing people who were very kind and helpful. Asking questions in Slack was super convenient, and there was always someone willing to help. Lots of people reached out to me personally to welcome me and get to know me. The mentorship program was also nice as I had a great mentor. The pay and the benefits are good. I also appreciated the CEO reaching out to me personally about the feedback I provided before I left which makes me believe he does care about improving.

Cons

Upper-management were extremely unprofessional and very rude. They preached ownership and pushed you to ask questions but would use this against you if they didn't like you. Even when following upper-management's specific instructions when it came time to give feedback they find one specific area to focus on and make you feel like the whole project was completely wrong even when I would follow the examples provided exactly. When presenting my final presentation for bootcamp I took specific steps to check-in with management and my mentor to ensure I was on the right track and even demo'd my presentation to my mentor and was told the project looked good, and made the small changes he recommended. Despite all of this my project was ripped to shreds. I was supposed to come up with my solutions for the problem I was given and even though my solutions came directly from the feedback the SME's that have this specific problem, I was told my solutions made no sense and that my process was all wrong even though I had previously went over my process with management prior to the presentation. Anytime I would try to point out how there criticism didn't make sense, they would shut me down and make me feel stupid for even trying to protest what they were saying. After 20 minutes of 3 managers harshly ripping apart my presentation, they implied I wouldn't have a job after the weekend. I spoke with my mentor about the feedback and he ensured me things would be ok and to just do my best with listening to the feedback. The next day though I was fired. This is without me actually working with the manager I was hired to work under, and not working with the implementation team at all. I then had all my permissions taken away so I couldn't even say goodbye to my mentor. It was cruel.

Grant Street Group Response
2y
Response from our Executive Vice President of Operations: Thank you for your kind remarks about your former colleagues and the pay/benefits we offer. With regard to your criticism of what you describe as unprofessional and rude upper management, you are right that the conversations we have surrounding our attempts to help underperforming coworkers succeed can be difficult. When we are concerned that someone is off course during onboarding or at any other point in their career here, we begin by offering specific feedback on areas for improvement. If, after a reasonable period of time, there isn't sufficient improvement, we provide a plan that lays out the areas in which we need to see the person's performance improve and discuss the concerns directly with the person. The plan includes weekly or bi-weekly check-ins and feedback from management. Upper management's involvement at this stage is intended to show genuine interest in and commitment to the success of their coworker. If and when it becomes clear that the employee can't succeed, we proceed to separate, paying no less than 30 days severance. We firmly believe it would be a disservice to the underperformer and their coworkers to prolong employment much beyond the point when it becomes clear they can't succeed at Grant Street Group, but may have the ability to succeed elsewhere. We are always open to feedback on our processes, and we appreciate you sharing your experience with our CEO. Our intention is never to make people feel like they were not treated fairly, and in your case we failed to achieve that when we decided not to move forward with your onboarding. For that, I apologize.

Good place to start out in tech

Pros

Great training program. Kind, enthusiastic mentors. Interesting, inspiring leaders. Interesting, smart, kind colleagues. Trying to make a positive work culture. Responsive to feedback. Decent pay although on the low side for industry. Open to people from different backgrounds (non-tech). Great place for young people to get a start in tech.

Cons

Rigid in belief structure. Lack of diversity in leadership. Growing too rapidly for upper management to really stay involved or aware of what is happening with the culture. Tendency for team leads to "kiss up and kick down" to get ahead. High rate of turnover. Tendency to mistake the role of critical feedback in motivation and performance. Recruit top performers and leave them feeling de-valued.
