Pros
Part-time work used to be fair, schedule and pay-wise, and even a little fun at times. People are generally nice and willing to work with you. This is despite corporate leadership leaving a lot to be desired.
Cons
The corporate leadership is either too used to being in the YMCA corporate culture or came from the private sector, and it shows. They seem to have a borderline discriminatory attitude towards center-level staff, and take great pleasure in blaming most issues on them without providing any support. They are incredibly out of touch, especially regarding workplace safety and maintenance. You can tell there are no trained public, non-profit, or recreation administrators in upper management, as they run things like a struggling business. In terms of fundraising, I find them highly unethical. Part-time staff are generally not treated very well, especially recently. Safety standards are inconsistent and seemingly are in place to satisfy insurance requirements rather than patron safety. Workplace toxicity is encouraged if you are part of the "in" group. People have gotten away with questionable behaviors and continue to do so, among both staff and patrons. Genuine effort to change this is met with resistance. Frequent organizational changes in leadership and standards that make working for them miserable. If you are a manager, you are pretty much left to figure things out yourself, with little training and onboarding.
