Opportunities to Succeed and the Support to Make it Happen!

Pros

Your only sales limit is the one you set in your own mind when working the local congregations. In my time in sales support at the home office, our attitude has always been one of supporting the sales representatives in the field with any questions they may have. Very friendly work environment, great benefits, and constant opportunities to develop my own skills in the workplace.

Cons

The senior management is very willing to work with us to help us succeed. However, as in any business the saying, "if it is to be it is up to me" applies to Guide Book Publishing as well. As long as you have a work ethic and set goals for yourself to strive towards each week, you can succeed.

Weak and dishonest management/ Outdated product/ Poor compensation and sales structure

Nothing worth noting at this time.

Cons

You pay your own expenses and will do a lot of driving. In the first month I worked there (which consisted of only 3 weeks) I was #2 in sales for the company but yet I was unable to exceed the $300 weekly draw! During the interview process, they will state they only work with churches that have a membership of 750+ but then will turn around and send you out of town to work a church with 500 members or less! Print advertising is not very lucrative in today's market and economy. They will tell you it is acceptable to work from home some of the time, but if you do, they will claim you have abandoned your position and will remove you from payroll without notice!

We apologize about any inconveniences you may have experienced during you time at GBP due to outside circumstances. When an account representative is doing a travel assignment all their expenses are compensated for prior to them leaving. They are provided a gas allowance to and from their destination, a per diem for food, and their hotel is fully paid for. The only out of pocket expense incurred by the account representative is local mileage. Other incidental expenses, such as postal, are reimbursed by the company on a monthly basis. Account representatives are always informed of the number of households in a congregation. This is the number of books to be mailed out and the relevant number to an advertiser. The number of members is always considerably larger as typically there are multiple members per household. The comment about checks being refused by the bank was due to a fraud alert be on our account due to some fraudulent checks having gone through our bank account recently. The teller was in error when they did not cash the check for this employee. The bank has since apologized for their error. A new check was issued the next business day and the employee cashed it with no issue.

Worst 3 months of my sales life!

-Freedom to sell ads to any company -Not one day is the same -Good support from ladies in the home office

Cons

-The product (ads in church directories) is a thing of the past, no one want to buy print media unless it reaches the whole market, not just one little sector of 500 or so families -Draw against commission -Work from church basement or office (half the time the church you are working doesn't have a place for you to work, so you have to work from home or hotel room) -Poor management (no training!!!) "My training consisted of my manager helping me make cold calls to area businesses." -Please DO NOT waste your time in interviewing or trying out this job! You will thank me! It's a JOKE!!!
