Pros

Parking is free, although that's expected outside of downtown. Expect a long walk if you get in after 8am. Lunch is free although you won't want to eat what they serve. Employee gardens are available.

Cons

Max 3% raise annually regardless of performance, bonuses are low or nonexistent, and base salary is not competitive with other companies in the area. Health insurance rates are poor, no home/auto discount for employees now that personal lines is sold, company and employees have created a culture that is afraid of change and technology. Vital systems go down on a weekly basis sometimes for hours at a time. Building is old and leaking with plumbing issues.

Be Aware

Pros

The company used to be one of the most amazing companies in the greater Des Moines area to work for. Free parking, free lunch, small on-site fitness facility. Casual dress.

Cons

Be aware of working for GuideOne. A company that was originally founded on caring for people only cares about their faltering success from years past. A new leadership team has brought on a mindset of only caring about the all mighty dollar and no longer on the employees. New management attempted to show "they care" about the culture by implementing onsite parties, but forgot that if your employees aren't cared for, what good are a few free drinks. The building is a mess both culture-wise and structurally. One former claims rep went as far as saying that if he were an agent "he wouldn't insure the building". The mold all over the building has been an issue for 20+ years and in an attempt to save on expenses, they "fix" the problems every year to no avail. Employees are stressed and overworked. There isn't enough staff to keep up with the workload and continue to fire people for reasons that don't make sense. The health insurance premiums are ridiculous. Basically, 10 years ago the company was a fantastic one that took care of their employees. Now, if you don't sleep at your desk at night and skip all activities outside of work you aren't considered a "team player". Mid-level managers willingness to be compassionate with employees physical, emotional or mental state is a joke. They no longer care about their employees. They are to concerned with worrying about their own job to take care of their people. The business is moving away from their core value of insuring places of worship or providing coverage for faith-based institutions and non-profits and are trying to become every other carrier in America and will spare no expense at doing so even if it costs them the health of their staff.

Pros

Nice location, free parking and free lunch. The people are friendly.

Cons

The company has downsized numerous times in the 20+ years I worked there. They continue to have issues with expenses but haven't taken lean operations seriously. instead they keep selling off businesses. They are now left with only their commercial product so they need to do something soon.

Pros

- Smart, solutions-oriented senior leadership team - Customer focused and believe in the value of quality service in all aspects of the company - Nice perks (fitness facility, free lunch, close parking, etc.) - Fun, collaborative work culture (not all areas, but most) - Recognition programs that reward hard work - Friendly, inviting employees

Cons

- The amount of recent change leaves more tenured employees feeling angst - Benefits could be better (i.e. PTO, maternity/paternity leave, etc.) - Due to the size of the organization, lack of career growth opportunities

Pros

Free lunch, but repetitive menu and yes the black bean burger.

Cons

Insufficient parking and a long walk to the building. IT is in the basement underground and in dire need of repairs. For the longest time the atrium was leaking water and you could see buckets lined up. The bathroom is gross and looks like it's 50 years old often backing up. Tenured employees are shifting around from one reorg to another and lower level staff if they're lucky get to systems analyst position and that's the ceiling unless you're close to someone that's in a position to help you get promoted. The hard working people are entry level programmers and yes the company hires a bunch of interns to pick up the slack. About 70% are contractors. Office politics run a muck at this place.

Run, Don't Walk

Pros

Coworkers are nice, lunch is free, facilities folks are nice, parking is close.

Cons

Where to begin. The company has severely declined in the past few years. People walk on eggshells. Management is sure to remind you that you're completely replaceable at any time and that you're not that special. Because of this, everyone thinks they're going to get fired or laid off. There is constant talk trickling down from the senior leadership and there has been for a while now. Benefit cost is abhorrent and honestly offensive. For some people, benefits increased by 175% in 2020. On top of it all, the benefits are subpar at best. GuideOne went from contributing to 75% of the premium 2019 to something like 60% in 2020, in addition to the cost increase. The company has no clearly defined goals other than profit, profit, profit and growth. It's a business, profit is the motivation - duh, but the leadership doesn't get any buy in from mid to lower level employees. Instead of empowering employees to do their jobs well, leaderships just tells employees they need to do better. In fact, if you're reading this and you're a regular reader of HBR, MOST, not all, but most senior leaders do the exact opposite of what the experts at HBR say you should do, including our chief executive. Hard work (meaning going above and beyond) is not recognized or rewarded. No opportunity for advancement in any functional area, from what I can tell. The CEO is an excellent businessperson, but a terrible leader. There has been major turnover in the uppermost levels of the company in the last two years - it's insane. The grunt workers can only be left to wonder if there is a culture of fear at the highest levels, which would make sense because that trickles down. Growth is being achieved at the expense of the employees, not to their benefit.

Thank you for your feedback. Health care is complicated – especially for an organization of our size. You cannot turn on the news without hearing about the rising cost of health care in general, but premiums are increasing for employers, as well. As a self-funded company, we finance a significant portion of the benefits plan for our employees and their family members. This gives us the flexibility to add services that are important to our employees, as well as exclude or reduce services that are not. Every year, we spend a great deal of time benchmarking our benefits to ensure they are competitive and in-line with other organizations in our market and with those in our industry. Several factors are considered and contribute to the final benefits package. While health benefits are extremely important, there are additional benefits that make up a strong benefits package. A few highlights of our total benefits package here at GuideOne include: • 401(k) plan with 100% match of employee’s contribution of up-to 7 percent • Casual dress code allows employees to wear jeans to work everyday • Free lunch every day in our Roof Top Café • Educational assistance offers tuition reimbursement for job-related courses and degree programs at most colleges and universities • Individual spot-bonuses for team leaders to recognize employees who go above and beyond • Quarterly companywide patio parties that include food, drinks and entertainment • Volunteer time off hours • Employee resource group activities • Wellness activities and wellness reimbursement • On-site fitness center includes weights, fitness equipment and locker rooms • Up-close, free parking
