Pros

Guidewire is a pretty special place. Great technology, a lot of people who really care about building software that works, and a lot of practicality. Bullsh*t doesn't fly here: there is a lot of skepticism around things that make other organizations starry-eyed. Pragmatic applications of unit testing is a good example: we test much better than most organizations, but we recognize there isn't a silver bullet out there, and testing is no substitute for good architecture. We also don't let pure architects exist: if you've got an opinion on something you better damned well be writing code for it. Best crew I've ever worked with.

Cons

We do roll a lot of our own technologies. That can be bad if you want to add the latest J2EE acronyms to your resume. But if you are a general technologist, it is a pretty fun environment. We've got our own langauge, web layer, OR layer, etc. All of it is done pretty well, when compared with the usual J2EE garbage, anyway. We are also tribalizing a bit as we get larger. Probably not much that can be done about that.

Pros

Guidewire offers one the opportunity to do something more interesting than just writing TPS reports or another boring data collection web-app. Guidewire is filled with more than your average amount of highly skilled and intelligent people. It may be that every organization says that, but my experience at Guidewire has shown it to be exceptionally true here. It is truly a great feeling to bring positive change to an industry which is so conservative. It is almost like the "win" is there for the taking and no one has bothered to take it before Guidewire arrived on scene. Guidewire demonstrates its aptitude by winning in spite of the monster challenges it faces, both in the industry and of its own making (see below). Guidewire's company e-culture is very strong, with an advanced and mostly maintained Wiki and a plethora of quite active mailing lists. Unlike a lot of community mailing lists, there is almost zero venom or disdain for silly questions. That shows a great deal of organizational maturity and increases the odds of having everyone participate.

Cons

As mentioned in the other reviews, the NIH (Not Invented Here) Syndrome is exceedingly strong in this organization, to their extreme detriment. The NIH doesn't only have negative effects on the engineering arm, but has absolutely crushingly detrimental effects on the services arm and ultimately the end users. The travel policy for the services employees tends to be on the burlap and cardboard side of the fence. As another reviewer wrote, Guidewire is extremely frugal with their money, which is fiscally sound, but it does invite some harsh conditions when traveling or awaiting a new laptop. The opposite side of that conservative-industry coin mentioned above is that requirements are exceptionally hard to come by and failure to meet these imaginary requirements are met with above average skepticism by the end users.

Pros

As a current employee of Guidewire I am very proud to be affiliated with this company, and extremely bullish about the company's future. We have a very flat organizational structure on the development side, which ensures that all voices and opinions are heard and our concerns with regard to schedule are factored into all release planning. The flat structure also allows for people to step up where they see a need and act to fill that need. After 8 years, the founders are still very involved with the day to day operations (for example, the CTO writes code on a regular basis). The company has a great tradition of internal and external transparency. Management shares extensive details about company financials, sales pipeline and other critical topics at quarterly meetings. The external transparency is evidenced in how sales and management deal with current and prospective customers, always telling the truth even when it's not going to be popular.

Cons

Not the greatest benefits package. Specifically, no match on the 401(k), and none planned until after a future IPO. In general the management is very frugal, bordering on cheap. On the plus side this has helped the company to surf the economic tsunami successfully and remain in a very strong market position, but a 401k match would be nice.
