Pros

Discount Connections with other musicians Promotions are easily attainable Very relaxed environment; they feed off of weird/quirky personalities Sometimes famous musicians come in the store The management at the store I work at are phenomenal and are always willing to help.

Cons

Pay- if you're on the sales floor you're working for hourly plus commission Customers can either be very arrogant, they are musicians after all, or incredibly clueless. Example: "I am looking for strings for my brother, but I don't know what brand he likes, the size, or the kind of music he plays.....or if he has an electric or acoustic...can you help me?" The goals the management sets, whether it be sales, pro coverage, or follow ups, can be unreachable if you are new and don't have clientele. If you are female...prepare to be offended by both customers and co-workers daily.

Pros

The gene pool is pretty shallow in most stores, so if you work hard, it's easy to move up the ranks. Tons of cool gear, great employee discount, decent benefits and flexible scheduling (within reason).

Cons

Very high turnover at all levels, a promotion might mean moving across the country, you have to sell extended warranties (blech!), and since it's retail, you have to work nights + weekends + holidays. Sales can be a vicious cycle too. The more you sell, the more they expect you to sell.

Good Employee Discounts. Nothing else

Pros

Good job for discounts if your a gear head. Good insurance for full time employees. Great people to work with.

Cons

No respect from management. Nonexistent "commission". The only way to make money is to be an assisant manager, who has the ability to manually discount anything in the store. There is no way the average employee can compete with this. Customers will abandon the hardworking salesman to purchase from a mgr who can "give them a deal". This happens more often than you think.
