Could be really great, but there are major issues
Pros
As a writer, this job is great. It's actually kind of a dream... I enjoy reading and communicating the clients' scientific research. I like the consistent flow that is also varied because of the clients' different backgrounds. Also, I love my coworkers a lot! The benefits aren't barebones, either.
Cons
I don't get the sense that management makes their decisions (both small and big) with much use of foresight or with much care for administrative or personnel needs. It's frustrating to work for a company that doesn't seem to be run by reasonable or well-tempered people. The training wasn't great for me, and the company actually eliminated what little training was being done. It was a tough couple of weeks in the beginning trying balance what I had heard in training and what my editors wanted. Also, the pay is not nearly enough for how much work is expected of people. I am basically at the most entry-level position. I have plenty of experience with deadlines. I have never been a slacker or a lazy worker. To me, this is a LOT of work, especially for the wages (which I calculated to be a bit over $16/hr). The amount of under-compensated labor has made for a depressingly high turnover rate among writers. It sucks to see coworkers and leads come and go, and I've only been here for five months. Here's what I would say to anyone looking for writing work: if you're not in love with the basics of this job--reading and writing about science--this company is not the place for you. I want to stay at this job because with better management and better wages (and a bit more PTO and better options for health insurance), this job would be amazing. But the company doesn't seem to be interested in keeping employees in the long term. There were many red flags that I ignored when I was in the recruiting process. Listen to your gut if you decide to apply here. Many young, fresh college grads get hired here and are worked until they're burned out and move on. This isn't by any means unusual, but it's still very disappointing. The many smart and great people who work at Hudson deserve so much better. I'll end by pointing out that it's, of course, not all bad. It wouldn't actually take many changes to make Hudson a good company to work for. Management, however, has not seemed interested enough in making improvements for my comfort. Since I like my coworkers and the actual work I do, I will continue to let myself be taken advantage of like the sad idealist I am.
