Pros

I've been at Harvard for 5+ years and been promoted 3 times to successively higher positions with higher salary and more vacation time. Smart colleagues, a generous salary, excellent benefits, ample paid time off, and the ability to take classes at the Extension School for virtually nothing all combine to make it an outstanding place to work.

Cons

Every now and then you get a dud colleague who is in the union and either bad at their job or lazy (or both) but the university can't get rid of them. I've had a few of them now and it's frustrating, but there are generally enough excellent colleagues to outnumber them.

Pros

If everything works out then Harvard is wonderful on your resume. Some researchers were able to succeed under the demands and pressures of their professors, but very few. Several other postdocs had to leave research as a career because of poor mentoring and career development.

Cons

If something does not work out, then Harvard will haunt you for the rest of your career. In the Boston area, Harvard on your resume does not have as much weight as you would think. Everyone in Boston is from MIT or Harvard.

Pros

- Flexible hours - Overall nice and competent co-workers - Location (Harvard Sq) - Good benefits package

Cons

- If you do not have a decent manager, it sucks to be you - Bureaucracy slows down everything - Each school used to be very independent but there's an effort to streamline processes and tools in IT, with mixed results (on-going process) - My school had to implement a new performance review process to rate employees in a normal curve, restricting (even more) raises within the team
