Good Benefits, Long Hours

Pros

Great work-life benefits in particular, with onsite childcare centers (subsidized based on income, though a waiting list), tenure clock extensions, teaching relief for new parents, fee-for-service emergency in-home childcare, partner job-search assistance.

Cons

Almost everyone works very long hours, due to an excessive service burden (too many committee assignments, compared to similar universities, at the departmental and university level), high expectations for quality of teaching (undergraduates and graduates), and high expectations for research productivity (particularly tough on junior faculty).

Pros

HGSE is a warm and inclusive community, and most employees are driven by a real desire to do good in the field of education. Harvard also offers above-average salaries and excellent benefits.

Cons

The school hesitates to fire people who can't pull their weight, meaning you may need to work around certain employees.
