Pros

I honestly believe the CEO Dan cares about the employees. The benefits are decent compared to other companies.

Cons

Where do I start? As I stated, I feel Dan does honestly care about employees, but I don't know if he truly knows what is really going on for people that are many levels below him. I hear him promote that he does skip level meetings. I was scheduled to be in one over a year ago and it was cancelled and never rescheduled. As far as promotions, I've been with the company a little over 4 years and I have not once been promoted. I have been given many kudos on my work and I feel I am respected by my co-workers, but it never happens. I feel unless your last name is "Burton", you are related to someone on the executive leadership team, you came here from Northwestern, you are close friends with someone in executive leadership or are a white male (I am not), then it is really hard to ever move up in this company. I am beginning to get really discouraged and wondering what am I working hard for this company for when they don't care about the hard work I am doing? Also, within ASO I have no clue how you really get promoted or level up. I have seen presentations and they sound really good, but I don't know who you need to know or what you need to do to be promoted. I see people given opportunities to be SMEs and work on projects and in my mind I am asking "Why them?", "How were they chosen?". For example, when COVID started new apps were created and adapted to help our clients. How were those AEs and ADs chosen to help on that project? I don't remember anyone asking for volunteers or anything along those lines. Maybe it happened and I missed it, but somehow they were chosen and I have to wonder and fear if it was because "They were the chosen ones", "They knew the right people" and it always seems like the same ones are "the chosen ones". One other thing that I feel can hurt being promoted in ASO and probably anywhere in this company is who you have for a manager. If they advocate for you, then great and if they don't then you are left to advocate for yourself by yourself. And then within ASO you have the HR manager and the Field Manager. Do they talk? I hope so. Speaking on work within ASO, the work can get boring within ASO. Even though there are different levels, I don't think they have solved the problem of a junior AE doing the same work as a senior AE and consultant AE. Again, some senior and consultant AEs are given other opportunities to grow and shine, but not all and I don't feel the opportunities and those chosen are done fairly.

Thank you for this review and feedback, and thank you also for your more than 4 years of contribution to the company. I can see, as I have read and reread your feedback, that we still have more work to do on the promotion process, as your experience is certainly not measuring up to our overarching objectives for team member experience and career opportunities. As we've discussed previously, and we'll discuss again during today's All Team Member meeting (as we consider together as fellow owners your specific feedback), our overarching goal is that every team member at Health Catalyst can, on average, qualify for and receive a promotion every 3-4 years, so the fact that you've been at Health Catalyst over four years without a promotion has fallen short of that objective. I also apologize that we had to cancel a scheduled skip-level 1:1 and that it never got rescheduled. I've asked Jenn Howard to allocate a few days over the next couple months for me to hold skip-level 1:1s with analytics engineers, and would welcome the opportunity to visit with you and better understand your experience. You can also just reach out directly to Jenn and we'll get a 1:1 scheduled. I would be happy to be a personal advocate for you here at Health Catalyst, as I desire to be for every team member at the company. Thank you again for your feedback, and I hope to visit directly with you in the near future. Best, Dan

Pros

There are so many reasons why Health Catalyst is a great place to work. Some of the top reasons are the culture and environment, the smart people that work here, and the leadership team, who continually shows me that they care about me as a person, whether or not they know my name. The COVID-19 pandemic has been particularly challenging for our company, but I couldn't be more pleased with the way that Dan Burton, particularly, has handled the situation and balanced the difficult task of making sure the company moves towards profitability and focusing on team members and their benefits. I genuinely enjoy the work I do here. A lot of that has to do with the division of the company I'm able to work in, and the autonomy I've been given and the trust that my managers have in me. That enables us to not feel undue stress and allows us to maintain a high level of quality work.

Cons

There are a few things I can think of that could be improved, but these cons in no way come close to outweighing the pros mentioned above. 1. I feel our software offering as an "all-you-can-eat" model doesn't allow us to reap the benefits of new products. As developers, we spend time making products better, adding to them, and improving them. The downside to this is that as we make the products better and add more functionality, there's more maintenance and support required; however, since the additions have no impact on the bottom line of the company, there's no justification to hire more developers to support those products. If product A is "more important" to clients than product B, it's difficult for us tell aside from utilization numbers and/or anecdotal evidence, and both those data points don't necessarily point to the importance of a product, or what someone would be willing to pay for it. 2. I think sometimes our culture of humility allows us to be too nice to people and enable to be less than they can. I've seen people just kind of coast through their job, not really putting in much effort, and continue to be rewarded through salary increases and generous benefits because they're not doing poorly enough to merit a formal improvement plan. Granted, this has much to do with the team member's manager, but it's something I've noticed a handful of times over the years.

Thank you for your feedback, and I'm encouraged to hear of the positives you listed in your 5+ years of experience and contribution to our company as a Software Engineer. I'm grateful to hear that you feel cared for and respected, and I hope that I know your name and some about your role, contributions and life. I recognize this becomes more difficult as we grow -- as of today, the company has more than 1,000 team members. I'm very glad, however, to hear that your direct manager knows you well, supports you and gives you autonomy, trusting you to contribute at an extraordinary level. I appreciate also your insightful feedback regarding what can be improved, and I agree with both of your categories of improvement feedback. On the first point, we are slowly moving towards more modularity in our software offerings, particularly at the apps level, and particularly as we expand our product offerings both through direct development and through acquisitions. This will enable us to have a more direct understanding of our clients' prioritization and valuing of various products, and will enable us to invest more in products where the demand is greater. On your second point, I agree also that we have more work to do with regards to addressing performance issues. We'll keep working on this in our interactions with and training of people managers. Thank you again for your feedback and for your 5+ years of tremendous contribution as a software engineer! Also, if we haven't had a 1:1 ever or for a while, I'd love to visit 1:1. Just reach out to Jenn Howard and we'll get it scheduled! I'm trying to spend one day each week in skip-level 1:1s, with a goal of 300+ skip-level 1:1s in 2020. Best, Dan

Pros

I cannot say enough about the CEO and his passion for taking care of the people at HC. I truly believe that when he says people are his first priority, we are. During one of the worst times this year in 2020, where many companies had layoffs, or furloughs, the biggest hit to our employees here was a temporary removal of a 401k match. I have worked for and know many companies who do not do a match so in the grand scheme of things, this was minor. We have a company that cares about our well being and will work w/ us if we need the time for family or a mental break. As an employee of Health Catalyst we are lucky to have leaders who care first about taking care of people.

Cons

We are growing quickly (yay) but tend to release solutions to the market w/o them being ready.

Thank you for your feedback and for your generous words. Thank you also for your many contributions these past seven years at Health Catalyst -- you have helped us grow and succeed through many periods of growth and maturation! We'll work to become better at our release of solutions, and in keeping our communication lines open as careful listeners, and we'll try to provide useful information to each of our teammates on a regular basis, including in today's all-team-member meeting! Best, Dan
