Pros

Management has always cared deeply about employees here. It has gotten harder as a public company, but they do care.

Cons

There have been many layoffs in the past 2-3 years. This has caused a hitt to morale and, of course, more work for those who remain.

Thank you for your feedback. Our leadership team deeply values team member morale. We want our team members to feel supported and engaged, and I appreciate you highlighting this valuable opportunity for improvement. I recognize that we face significant challenges, and each year presents the demanding task of “earning the right” to continue moving forward as an independent public company. In this work, we remain committed to transparent communication—acknowledging both the positives and the difficulties—without resorting to corporate spin or empty messaging. Team member engagement is a top priority for leadership, it is at the center of our company strategy, the center of our company flywheel. We don’t want our team members to lose confidence, and we remain committed to making sure our message aligns with their experiences. I’m sorry to hear that our communication did not fully meet this goal for you. We will continue striving to improve, working to better address both the challenges we face and the reasons for optimism. Your more than eight years of contributions to our success are very appreciated. I wish you the best in your next chapter! - Dan Burton

Pros

The people are wonderful. Smart, kind, hard working. Work life balance is great especially for consulting.

Cons

It has been years of verbal reassurance that things will look up financially, but good faith is starting to wane. Leaders are underpaid and the market outlook is not looking optimistic for margins to increase in a way that sustains variable compensation commitments. Interdepartment communication is poor and all teams are very thinly staffed.

Thank you for taking the time to share this thoughtful feedback. I truly appreciate your recognition of the talent, dedication, and character of our team members. I’m also glad to hear that you’ve found work-life balance to be a positive aspect of your experience. I understand your concerns regarding financial outlook, compensation, and team investment. We recognize that sustaining competitive compensation while navigating market challenges is critical, and I want to assure you that leadership remains focused on addressing these concerns in a way that supports both our team members and the long-term health of the company. Additionally, I appreciate your feedback about interdepartmental communication. I welcome the opportunity to discuss your thoughts further in a 1:1 conversation. Your perspective is valuable, and I’d appreciate hearing more about your experiences and any ideas you may have. I also hope you can see and recognize the differentiation that Health Catalyst offers vs. nearly every smaller healthcare technology startup company operating in this space. Health Catalyst has been steadily and significantly improving its profitability every year since going public nearly six years ago, and recorded its first year of meaningful positive adjusted free cash flow in 2024. There are few, if any, healthcare technology startups with positive free cash flows, which means that they are dependent on outside sources of capital to fund their basic operations. We at Health Catalyst do not have that dependency anymore, and this offers financial sustainability and staying power that these other companies have not yet achieved, and few venture-backed companies ever get to this point. It is one of the reasons why the vast majority of venture-backed startups fail. We have plenty of challenges at Health Catalyst, to be sure. But we also have unique, differentiating strengths that include a strong balance sheet, a company with growing profitability and cash flows, size and scale that almost no other healthcare technology company enjoys – including over 1,000 client relationships. Thank you again for your feedback—it helps us continue to grow and improve as an organization. I hope you see a meaningful and rewarding future with Health Catalyst! Best, Dan Burton

Pros

Work/life balance is still good. The office building is nice although rarely utilized and there are some decent snacks there for those who care about that. Flexibility of working location is the number one benefit to working here.

Cons

Sadly, there are more cons than pros here these days. Company strategy is unclear and many leaders don't exhibit great leadership capabilities. Many of the most talented employees are gone and people who remain are spread quite thin in most cases. There isn't much of a company culture anymore. Culture war participation here is divisive and distracts from the real work we're here to do. Recent updates to compensation net out to less money in employees' pockets, and that isn't good news to us. I would caution anyone in product management from joining here as you'll most likely not find the work you would do here fulfilling. You will not find empowered product teams here. Product management here mostly means scrum and backlog management and other product owner type duties.

Thank you for your more than nine years of dedication to Health Catalyst. Your contributions over this time have been significant, and I deeply appreciate your willingness to share your honest perspective. It’s encouraging to hear that work-life balance and workplace flexibility continue to be positive for you. At the same time, I want to acknowledge your concerns, and apologize that your experience hasn’t lived up to the ideals we describe in the Health Catalyst Way. Leadership is a responsibility we take seriously, and I hear your frustration regarding company strategy and leadership development. We are committed to continuous improvement in these areas and to fostering a work environment where every team member feels heard and supported. We will be using every all-team-member meeting in 2025 to share and emphasize, so that there can be clarity and an ongoing dialogue to answer any questions, our company strategy, as well as monthly updates on the important product strategy work that has been a deep focus as part of 2025 planning, and which work continues throughout 2025. I hope that these discussions will help you understand the company’s strategy, engage in the product strategy development process, and develop confidence in Health Catalyst’s unique differentiation within our areas of focus, and our ability to win as a result. Regarding compensation, we understand that financial security is a critical concern. We continue to benchmark salaries and benefits annually, striving to offer above-market pay, including the recent above-market 5% base salary increase in late 2024. We also remain committed to our strong benefits package, which includes flexible PTO, 18 company-paid holidays, generous 401(k) matches, company-paid life and disability insurance, fitness, and home office reimbursements, online company-sponsored counseling and physical therapy, and education assistance of up to $10,000 annually. We know there is always more work to do in this area, and compensation remains a priority in our 2025 board-approved operating plan. I also hear your concerns about our culture and the broader challenges facing our teams. We want Health Catalyst to be a place where every team member feels valued and respected. Our goal is to create an environment where all individuals can thrive while staying focused on the mission that unites us—enabling massive, measurable, data-informed healthcare improvement. We recognize that strengthening our culture requires thoughtful leadership, and we are committed to ensuring our values guide every decision we make. If you’re open to it, I’d welcome the opportunity to hear more of your thoughts directly and explore how we can continue to improve in a 1:1 meeting with you. I sincerely appreciate your candid feedback and your long-standing contributions to our company. Best, Dan Burton
