Pros

Our CEO is fantastic genuinely cares about team embers AND about our growth. The industry is fickle and HC keeps an ear to the ground to sense shifts that we need to be ready for. The vision is real as is the passion of the majority of staff. Although it will be about 2 years without a raise (due to my current salary, ranges and restructuring), I accept this as a small loss that is offset by the generous benefits, stable work environment, bonus's and education benefit. Everyone I work with is willing to go the extra mile or two to make sure our clients needs are met. I feel blessed to be at Health Catalyst and hope to continue to contribute for many more years.

Cons

There is a bit of a boys club in upper leadership. I think it is viewed as this due to the longevity and gender of some leaders. However, it permeates the culture and is noticeable. Some sense this small group of men make behind the scenes decisions and bypass transparency; some people have been 'black-balled' due to ONE person's experience that was shared with other men in the club. Maybe that is the nature of the beast, but it doesn't fit in the culture HC is promoting. The other major issue I see is communication barriers between departments; I think people try but the wheels spin fast at HC and it is a challenge to keep up.

Thank you very much for sharing this feedback. I have read it and reread it, as there are some elements in this feedback that are critical to deeply understand and then ensure we address. Thank you also for your kind and encouraging words regarding the positives of your experience. Also, I appreciate your willingness to sacrifice for the company -- but I am also happy to share some good news with you. Last month as the board approved our final 2019 operating plan it included a salary increase policy change, that enables us to give every team member who is not on a performance plan a base salary increase, even those who are at or above the 75th percentile for their position. It won't be a huge raise -- likely around 1.5% -- but it's something, and it was important for us to find a way to include it, to recognize and express appreciation to every team member for their great work. So that will come for you as of January 1 of next year. I'm also really grateful for your long-term commitment to the company and its mission. Your deep engagement in the mission is at the center of our flywheel -- and it is central to our long-term success. Thank you also for sharing your concerns about upper leadership and the potential of being a bit of a 'boys club.' This is a dynamic that I am concerned about as well, as we do have a leadership team that, like nearly every other level of the company, includes only approximately 30% of its members who are female. The tech industry in general is even more skewed towards males. I also am concerned about the notion of a team member being hamstrung in their opportunities at the company based on only one person's experience. We have a stated performance management policy where we give team members a second chance for precisely this reason, among a few other principle-based reasons, including exhibiting the humility to recognize that when there is a performance issue, almost always we as a company could have done better in that situation as well. Furthermore, I want to share a deep personal view that it is critical that no one is untouchable, including myself and everyone else at every level of the company. It is critical that we be consistent in our commitment to the values of the company. And when we make a mistake, that we quickly admit the mistake, apologize, and work to fix it. This applies to me, to every member of the board and the leadership team and every other team member at Health Catalyst. Let me conclude with an invitation. Would you consider setting up a 1:1 with me to help me better understand these items so that I can be better informed in seeking to address any issues and enable our company and our leadership to improve? I would commit to you to keep our conversation private, and would very much appreciate the opportunity to better understand your perspective. Just reach out to Jenn Howard, my assistant, if that will work for you. Thank you again for your commitment to helping our company be successful, to helping us achieve the worthy mission of the company, and to being willing to stay committed to this mission long-term. Best, Dan

Pros

The organization has the strongest culture that I have ever been part of. When you begin working at HealthCatalyst the cultural aspects seem to good to be true - but it is not. It took me almost 6 months to realize our company really believes in transparency. The work we do is extremely rewarding and the long hours and travel are offset by mission and caliber of coworkers you work alongside. When you raise a concern with management you feel heard, if they are unable to assist you are told why. Benefits are the best I have had in my 10+ year career and continue to improve.

Cons

Work life balance has been almost non existent the last several months. A lack of planning for large scale implementations and lack of new hiring have led to resources booking 2-3x the recommended hours for weeks to months on end. I have had new hires express to me that the cadence of the work was not what they were led to believe when they were hired on, I have assured them that we are flexing up and that this isn't the norm but it has been harder and harder to convey that message. Relief has been around the corner for some time and lately this has been the case. It feels that management is listening and adjusting based on the above feedback but I don't want to lose sight of the risk these situations put us in with talent retention and job satisfaction. I worry when some of our most tenured resources choose to leave HC, even though our overall turnover rate is below industry standards when individuals who have been here 4-6 years it is hard not to wonder if they see something that I do not. The company operates as two entities - technology and professional services. There are efforts to integrate and cross pollinate info but some of these efforts have fallen flat. Each iteration of the platform offers a multitude of new features but there is a disconnect with the field team who has to recommend those solutions. An internal NPI like rollout would be incredibly helpful where we show off what new features are available and use cases that highlight that feature.

Thank you for sharing these detailed and well-organized and reasoned thoughts. They are resonant with me, and consistent with feedback we receive elsewhere. Let me address a couple of the themes you highlight. First, the need for work-life balance. This is something that requires constant focus, and there absolutely are times where we need team members, as fellow-owners who are committed to the mission, to spike their efforts. But this needs to be followed by compensatory time to recharge. And the overall pace needs to be long-term sustainable, as we are engaged in a mission that will take decades to fully realize. As part of the 2019 planning process we are trying to build in some slack in the form of a bench in professional services. Second, related to your comments about the need for better integration between technology and services, I believe we will take some important steps towards integration in 2019, and we are preparing and iterating on the "how" as part of the 2019 planning process. We will become more focused on "solution bundles" of both technology and services, or tech-enabled services, all aimed at a particular customer problem or pain point. This should help us make progress in integration in 2019. But no matter how we organize, there will always be "seams" that we have to manage, and that's also why we try to keep our objectives largely focused on company-wide goals, to encourage integration and an overall "ownership" mindset. We will keep working on this. Thank you for your contributions to the company for over three years. I deeply appreciate the contributions of team members such as yourself, who have chosen to stay with the company for many years. I strongly desire to enable you to want to stay at Health Catalyst for many years to come, and feel as you do when we lose a long-tenured teammate. We will keep working hard, every day, to strive towards the goal of Health Catalyst as a best place to work for every team member. Thank you again for your feedback. Best, Dan

A dream come true

Pros

Working at Health Catalyst is a dream come true. One of the best things is the transparency of the leadership. Going to All-Team Meetings is awesome. You come out of those meetings feeling energized about the mission and efforts of the company, and that you have a big picture view of all the great things going on. Another awesome thing is the generosity of the company. When someone treats you fairly, or more than fairly, you stop worrying about if you're being treated fairly and you focus on being an engaged teammember. That is the case at Health Catalyst. They don't have to make every employee an owner by giving us all stock options but they do. They don't have to give us all an extra $1,000 bonus in our HSA every January but they do. They didn't have to set our default yearly raise well above inflation at 5% but they did. They don't have to start special matching fundraisers for the families of deceased teammates, but they do. It's things like this that make you know that Health Catalyst puts their money where their mouth is. Last I checked there are about 22 days of company holiday - the entire office closes & you get this time off regardless of what other PTO you might take. Oh yeah, don't forget about the very generous & ownership-oriented unlimited PTO & maternity/paternity leave policies. Of course, generous compensation & benefits (hygene factors) are only part of the story. Other companies *cough* Goldman Sachs *cough* are also really generous with their employees in compensation, but they work them to the bone. Generous compensation can't compensate for poor quality of life. At Health Catalyst, it's a marathon, not a sprint. Family is paramount. Travel is kept at a minimum. It is understood that sometimes we will need to spike our work effort to achieve a goal, but the spike is followed by a compensatory rest period. Most people I know don't work much over 40-45 hours/week. All this is great, but what about the people? I have found that the people you work with (the culture of the group) is what largely determines your day-to-day enjoyment and working interactions. I've found almost everyone to be very approachable and great to work with. The culture is upbeat, positive, fun and friendly. In fact, there is a huge cultural emphasis on humility. That is such a breath of fresh air. It's not a college frat-house party. Health Catalyst doesn't try too hard to be cool (that's the vibe I get from a lot of the other notable Utah startups). In conclusion: the mission of the company, the culture, the compensation and benefits. I didn't really talk about this, but the work itself is great too! There is a lot of need to improve and a wealth of opportunities within the company to improve your skills, learn new things and do great work that makes a real life-saving difference for thousands of people. PS - the fitness classes and on-premise gym make such a difference in my day. I can take an hour or so out of the day to go to a class, workout, or play frisbee with fellow teammates and it really boosts my mood and productivity (and saves me from the 2 pm mid-afternoon slump (but there is a nap room if you get tired!)).

Cons

In the Pros I said that I found *almost* everyone to be great to work with. I did have a not-so-great experience working with one person. However, that turned into a good learning/improvement opportunity. Most of us acknowledge that our "Cons" are really, really minor first world problems. Not everyone has a standing desk. The fourth floor lacks enough natural sunlight in some areas. The $10,000/year tuition reimbursement benefit can't yet be applied to online certifications & training (at this stage, most employees aren't trying to get another master's degree; we just want to keep learning new skills, which is cheaper & quicker to do online).

Thank you very much for your sincere, heart-felt review. We appreciate the comments and perspective as you describe (accurately, I think) what it is like to work here at Health Catalyst. And, as anyone who works here will tell you, we are far from perfect, or having everything figured out. We are, however, beginning to collectively reap the benefits of a corporate team that is working together everyday to improve outcomes for our customers. As we each get up every day, focusing on outcomes improvement and treating one another like people, we stay on the path of success. This goal is easy to describe in principle, but incredibly hard to consistently and sustainably execute in practice. So incredibly grateful to be on this daily journey with you and everyone else here at Health Catalyst! Sincerely, Jeff Selander ** UPDATE ** Those of you that work here at Health Catalyst already know this, but since this review was written and posted, we have revamped our education policy to include online training courses and other relevant training/education offerings in our benefit, in large part to the review that was posted here. It really does work at Health Catalyst! :-)
