Pros

It is a very strong company, they will always have work, it would take a LOT of screw ups to get fired. The benefits are close to unbeatable and if you stick around for 10+ years the money will be great.

Cons

You can expect to work a minimum of 50 hours a week, often up to 70+ hours a week depending on the phase of work. You will be micromanaged constantly to ensure you fit the "HP mold". Your day will start at a 6am meeting (6:30 at latest) but its very common for people to show up as early 4am to try to tackle the work load. At this meeting you will be expected to provide an hour by hour schedule of what you will be doing for the day. Expect that to be criticized by the other workers in the room. Do not expect to leave before 5pm, and expect to leave around 7pm normally. Mandatory 5pm sign ins are common, particularly on holiday weekends where people plan to hit the road early to beat traffic. It is very much a white male driven company. That being said, women and minorities are hired often, as numbers, and promoted through the lower ranks quickly to promote diversity, but rarely make it past the position of project engineer. As with most large construction companies, expect to move, often. Unlike most large construction companies, expect to move, at a moments notice, your family situation will not be considered, less than two weeks notice to move to projects across the country is the norm.

Pros

The company has GREAT benefits and takes care of its employees as far as health and retirement are concerned

Cons

If you are trying to find a work/life balance here, this is not the place for you. The hours are long and it leaves little time for any type of social life unless your married, however I hear at some location and districts the relationships with co-workers are a lot more outgoing and the work/life balance is a lot better then on my current job-site. I have not experience any relocation or expense issues but I hear that is a big problem. When it comes to site relocation, management, in some cases, do not consider your situation and typically give you a less than a week to move you and your family. It all depends on your PM and PS at the job-site which determines the demeanor of the site and workers.

Pros

Relaxed work environment. Good people, especially the craft. Young engineers learn a lot from their field experience. Very good overall training program - employees have access to a plethora of industry courses year-round through a very well designed and implemented company education portal.

Cons

The hours are ridiculousness. Kiss your personal and family life goodbye. Communication at HP is horrible. Though this is the construction industry, often HP gives less than a week notice when its time to uproot and move to a new job. Communication between lower and upper-level management isn't great either. Its difficult to get an honest assessment of your progress or deficiencies. HP has a terrible record of retaining and promoting minorities and women.
