HJ used to be a good place to work

Pros

There aren't any anymore. It used to be a good place to work but the management at Varsity are so hands-off that they have no clue what's going on at HJ.

Cons

IT has been divided by management to create isolated teams that are encouraged to compete and sabotage each other, it's like working in a poorly scripted reality tv show as they decide what pieces to outsource. Upper management has no problem lying to your face, telling you that your team is safe, and then going to another team and telling them that you're on the chopping block. It's an incredibly hostile work environment created on purpose by upper management.

Decline in quality

Pros

-Independent nature of the job is great, and earning potential is high in the right area (not true for every area). -A few people in sales management are great people who want you to succeed. -Physical product is good quality, and Herff Jones has a positive brand image in schools. -Working with students is awesome.

Cons

-Many salaried employees who work in customer service and production are not incentivized to do a good job and therefore put forth minimal effort which hurts sales reps. -Software develop team is atrocious. Online programs have been in constant decline, and everything is released late - and I mean REALLY late. They wait until dozens of reps are screaming on SalesForce that everything is 2 months late before they finally release. What makes this the most frustrating is that these people don't see it as a big problem, but schools are sitting there doing nothing while we wait. -Pricing - the pricing is incredibly variable, and the plant management will try to rip off reps to help their bottom line. This is not an exaggeration. The price quoted to sales reps will vary by thousands of dollars depending on who you are and what they feel like they can get away with. -In general the production half of the company views sales as the "enemy." It is a very frustrating and negative relationship.

Disappointing culture

Pros

Having a hard time coming up with any positives at this point, other than co-workers. Colleagues are really pulling together at this point, out of necessity.

Cons

Lack of communication and transparency in future plans. People being laid off for the past several months have reduced staff to the point where getting things done is painful. Many nice perks that were given in the past have disappeared. Compensation has been cut by 23% over the past year. Building facilities are embarrassing.
