Thank you for providing a review on Glassdoor. We are always interested in what our employees think about their company. We are happy to hear you enjoy your coworkers and our work environment. Promotion from within is highly encouraged at Horizon. Most positions are posted, and interested individuals apply to be considered candidates for the opportunity. Of course, some employees have skills and/or experience that makes them more suitable than others for particular roles. Please do not get discouraged--we have many, many success stories of people who have built interesting careers at Horizon through internal promotion and transfers! We appreciate your contributions to Horizon, and please feel free to speak to your leadership team, Human Resources, or senior management with any questions or concerns at any time.

We are glad you are sharing your thoughts with Glassdoor readers on some of the great things about Horizon--great people, fun products, and a pleasant work environment! It is concerning you believe you had been misled. I certainly hope you shared those concerns with the appropriate people until you were able to get some answers, because it is never our intention for employees to feel we were not honest and straightforward with them. If you could not get answers from your direct manager, Human Resources is always available for employees, or you could have used our open door policy to speak to senior leadership. Like any organization, we do periodically review our current and business needs, and adjust our staffing accordingly. However, even when we decide to contract in certain job functions, we are generally hiring in other areas where we are focusing our efforts for growth and innovation. Oftentimes, individuals with suitable skill sets are moved within the company to new opportunities. For those we cannot place internally or who choose not to accept a transfer, we take steps to assist them with their transition. Thankfully this does not happen often, but we try to do the right thing when it does. Unfortunately, offering overtime compensation to salaried employees is not an option. To do so would be a violation of employment regulations. However, we realize some roles within the company do involve non-traditional hours--including weekends--to provide the best interaction with our consumers. In return, we try to offer flexibility during other times to offset the dedicated efforts employees give in support of weekend events or work shifts. It is nice to hear you appreciated the benefits we offer. We have worked hard over the years to offer a solid line up of benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life, long term disability, short term disability, long term care, paid time off, 401(k), EAP services, product discounts, tuition assistance, scholarship opportunities for the children of employees, corporate events, etc. In fact, our carriers frequently comment on the strength of Horizon's total rewards package in comparison to other companies of our size. Thank you again for your review, and for your service to Horizon! We wish you much success in the future.

Weak management

Pros

Pockets of strong people in several different functions. Product line is competitive, but not as strong as it once was.

Cons

Management is slow to react, very insular and top heavy. They lack strong people management skills and rely too much on data instead of cultivating and growing strong employees that are well managed. At times, it seems like management wants to operate from a textbook perspective without actually working hard and understanding that strong companies are created by developing strong people throughout all functions and all levels of the organization. Too many employees operate from sense of fear, without good knowledge and with little genuine appreciation of their worth to the company. Company (management) touts and talks values but do not live the same.
