Pros

The only pro of working at HISD is the salary, but even that isn’t enough to justify the job. This is evident in the fact that countless teachers, including myself, have left and continue to leave HISD.

Cons

Cons include: - Unsupportive and disrespectful principals who are focused only on keeping their job rather than supporting their teachers and staff. - Unrealistic working conditions with students who have severe behavioral issues. - Due to the increase in teacher salary, principals are increasing the workload as well. - Regarding the workload: It is an impossible amount of work to complete. Literally impossible. Teachers are killing themselves trying to keep up with their new job duties and as a result are not sleeping enough and are burnt out. - There is little to no creative freedom with lesson planning - you are required to use district-given slideshows and district-given quizzes/worksheets - The general atmosphere is chaotic and stressful which the students can feel and are reacting to. - The students have an unreasonably high work expectation and are not given enough time or opportunity to connect with each other, develop meaningful relationships, develop emotionally, and be children.

Pros

Good work environment, but greatly depends on the campus and administration. Working for the community and cultivating the love of education in the future generations. Decent benefit packages and pay scale Summers and holidays off.

Cons

Everything is always changing and the wheel reinvents every year, depending which programs, vendors or alliances are brought for. Lack of support for teachers and staff, overcrowded classes, not enough manpower for the load of work that there is! Micromanagement, needless paperwork and duties, and the assumption that everybody is willing or able to do work during their personal time. Lack of trust in teachers' instructional methods, constant observation and scrutiny, especially by people who barely have any experience in the classroom, who are constantly scheduling planning and meetings to justify their job. Due to burnout, many teachers and staff lose their interest or commitment to their jobs.

Terrible Onboarding Process

Pros

Can't say never took job I was offered do to unusual onboarding practices.

Cons

The hiring/onboarding process was unusual, backwards, and seemed to be unprofessional. I was offered a position with HISD at the end of December I was not given my salary until 10 days before my start date which was to be at the end of January. HISD does not give you your salary or start date until AFTER you complete all the necessary information such as background check, I-9, and on boarding documents. After I was given my salary which was the MINIMUM of the salary pay scale I was told that they DO NOT negotiate salary, but they will adjust based on your experience when you provide Verification of Employment from previous employers. I provided VOE letters and was told it would take 1-2 days to verify my employment and provide an adjusted salary based on my experience. Over a week later I had not been given an adjusted salary. I chose to decline the offer. It appeared as though they were trying to stall me out so that I would so up the first day and be stuck with the salary they offered.
