Pros

Salary and benefits. Calendar in line with other local districts. CE opportunities.

Cons

My experience was negative more from my campus than HISD as a whole. Campus leadership was more concerned looking good and being socially "sensitive" than acknowledging there are SERIOUS issues occurring on a daily basis. Student behavior such as gang activity, sexual assault, physical altercations, etc... was always blamed on teachers rather than dealt with by involving parents and appropriate authorities. Most students are 1-2 years behind in core subjects but that takes a backseat to "teaching for the tests." Staff turnover is EXTREMELY high with some leaving mid year or just not returning after extended breaks.

Pros

Diverse work culture and environment. Competitive starting salary and overall school district pay. Good insurance, incentives, and other employee benefits. Opportunitities for advancement/ promotion. Great work-life balance capabilities. The well-being of the students comes first.

Cons

May require long commutes in heavy traffic to and from work; better to coordinate work location with choice of residence. Stipends may be limited for certain areas of specialization. Funding cuts cause barriers to providing the best student learning experiences in some cases.

Pros

The summer and winter vacations, plus holidays. Great colleagues.

Cons

Everything else. School admins seem unprofessional. They took my 20 minute lunch break to provide feedback if I ate lunch in my classroom. I ended up not eating lunch. They also, instructed a different teaching methods every 3 to 4 weeks. I was given 38 textbooks for 98 students. I recommended teaching from the textbook. They instructed me to not use the textbook because it was for low level learning, even though the middle school students barely knew how to read. They ended up visiting a high achieving school and all that they were doing was teaching off the textbook. Admins also take a LOT of time to respond and implement consequences to behavior students. Also, the school decided to eliminate in-school suspensions. I had no way of keeping the extremely misbehaved students out of the classroom. I had a horrible work-life balance while working as a teacher for HISD. I recommend to stay away from Title 1/ IR schools.
