Unfulfilled promises

Pros

-unlimited PTO -the people are the number one perk -dog friendly office -extroverted atmosphere, you can walk up to anyone and ask a for directions

Cons

Specifically in the support org, there is a disparity between what is promised upon hiring (e.g. most people leave after 1 year and find another internal position, there's a pay raise every six months until capping at L3, you can use your off phone hour to pursue other projects). While it is possible to find a job internally, support reps aren't taken seriously in most other parts of the company, and have to re-start at a different entry level position after knowing the technical side of the project inside and out. HubSpot pays far below industry standard in all roles, and internal reps are frequently lowballed when being promoted. The atmosphere and goals have become more authoritarian and less encouraging and certainly more rigid and have a misaligned ideal of what it takes to actually leave support, which is widely recognized as the only reason for joining support in the first place≥

Sorry to hear your frustration--Support continues to be the team that is most hired by other parts of the org (product, marketing, CS, and now even more on sales too), so we have a ton of opportunities for folks from Support and ways to help support folks growing from Support throughout the organization. Thanks for being honest about your experience-we are always looking to learn, grow, and improve and even the tough feedback helps us improve working in collaboration with the Support org. Sincerely, Katie

Pros

They care about employees as people, not just part of a balance sheet. They are transparent when something isn't working and how they are going to fix it. People care about their work and their colleagues. People are respectful of one another. I've also had many meetings with our CEO, CTO, CMO, COO, and none of them acted too busy to meet with me even though I am not an executive. They're very present and engaged no matter what your title is.

Cons

As it's gotten bigger, it has gotten more bureaucratic in terms of the pace of decision-making and the hoops you have to go through to get something done. The pace is still often quite high in terms of projects and deadlines, though. That can be good and bad. It's not boring since it's a high pace, but can be hard to meet the demands of a high-pace environment when there's more hoops to jump through than before, when the company was smaller.

Thanks for your review and your callout that you feel important to our executive team--our team members really matter, so I'm delighted to hear that comes through. We just extended parental leave two years ago, so not sure that's something we'll revisit soon, but it's good feedback to have, so thanks for sharing your push on that and on bureaucracy--feedback is always welcome here. Thanks for helping our marketing team grow and for taking the time to write this! -Katie

Sales Positions Should be Called "Creative Outreach Rep"

Pros

Dogs in the office, food, beer, lots of young employees (feels like college)

Cons

The Business Development role and Inbound Growth Specialist role are more so a "creative outreach role." Almost all training revolves around just getting someone on the phone. The best performing BDR's were promised a promotion in 10 months but it really ends up being at least 13. I don't think the product was that good and Corporate Sales is a failing segment. DO NOT work in the corporate segment at HubSpot.

Sorry to hear that your time at HubSpot was less stellar than you expected--you're right that for many folks it ends up being 12 months to a promotion, so we've worked to set better expectations there up front in the recruitment process. With that said, our BDR program has a ton of learning and coaching opportunities that we believe really help serve as a catalyst for a career in sales at HubSpot and beyond, so I would push back a bit that our BDR program is simply around outreach. Nonetheless, I appreciate the feedback-we'll use it as we always do to improve and grow our experience and expectation-setting for BDRs coming in. Sincerely, Katie
