Pros

I joined hudl about 4 months ago, the biggest pro so far has been the talent. Everyone is good, yet humble and easy to work with. Founders are actively involved in company, they do good job of communicating mission/values and company direction to the team. Benefits and compensation is top notch. Culture is actually exactly like they advertise it to be, it's not just a slogan. Daily ping pong helps too. I previously worked at a large corporation full of politics and bureaucracy, switching to Hudl has been like a breath of fresh air. The focus at Hudl is delivering value, and that's accomplished by giving talented folks the autonomy and freedom to do what makes sense.

Cons

Can be difficult to balance work load, that's likely more my problem vs a culture problem. The autonomy, while refreshing, can seem chaotic at time.

We're glad you've enjoyed your time so far! That crazy fast growth is definitely at the top of everyone's minds, but we hope that by continuing to hire the right people, culture will survive. Thanks for being a part of it.

Pros

Hudl is going to make it hard to work anywhere else. The free food and unlimited vacation are definitely contributing to that, and I can't get past how much I love the work environment. You're treated like a complete adult, even if we eat at 11am like children. Hudl takes a #gsd approach to work and measures output instead of time. We work fast and we work hard, which is something I love. No waiting for months or years for features to see the light of day - having around 40 releases a week means new features are being brought to users multiple times *a day*. The structure of the company makes sense for the amount of areas we're trying to be world-class in, and the amount of collaboration between teams is amazing. Even better, we're all friends; there are countless opportunities to hit up the bars, play a pick-up game of basketball, tailgate a football game, or anything in between with your coworkers. But, above all, I appreciate the care the employees put into making sure everyone is staying sharp and improving on a professional level. Providing money for people to attend conferences to up their game, regularly critiquing people of all skillsets on their work, and encouraging employees to speak at conferences around the country are just a few things we do to keep ourselves in a constant state of growth. I'm confident I'm learning more at this job than I have anywhere else, and I'd recommend it to any developer (or anyone, for that matter) in a heartbeat.

Cons

As much as I love the encouragement Hudl gives us to grow professionally, it can be hard to see a clear career path at times. Growing within your role is easy and highly supported, but growing into a leadership or otherwise higher-up role can be less easy and isn't as well-supported. Steps are being taken with management training classes and certifications, but management training is by-and-large used by people already in management roles and certifications are just kicking off.

I'm glad to hear you enjoy the fast-paced, hard working culture at Hudl! We strive to foster that challenging environment and it couldn't be done without the hardworking team we have. Thanks for the feedback on the career path and opportunity to grow within the organization. That's definitely a challenge for Hudl and we'll continue to improve as we build better programs. Definitely reach out to your supervisor if you have more ideas and feedback on how we can get better!

Pros

Downtown Lincoln is cool. I made great friends here. They let you select or build your own computer for work and after two years you can keep it. But statistically 93% of employees aren't there long enough to keep the computers and upper management laughed when that was pointed out.

Cons

This place is micromanaged out the rear. Meetings everyday discussing what didn't get done yesterday. The work load is huge for what they pay. You will work 60+ hours a week to get everything they ask done. Just know that now. And when you're beat down and tired, they will fire you. Also I watched as interviews were conducted and candidates with real world experience were passed for family members in high up management positions. This company spent way to much time with its Tuesday, look how awesome we are meetings, and squiring similar companies, instead of caring about it's product or employees. And after all that, they never listen to their customer! They push all their time and effort into creating new features the customer didn't want or ask for.

We apologize for the poor experience, but really appreciate the feedback you've provided. I don't know if that 93% is intended to be a real stat, but can assure you that number is not accurate. In fact, more than 80 Hudlies have stayed on for 2+ years. In terms of our office-wide meetings on Tuesdays, we've made significant changes in the last few months to keep things short and the content concise with one main topic discussed each week, as opposed to every department providing its own update. Regarding the biweekly meetings, the structure and productivity varies from team to team, but we're always looking for ways to make them better. If you have suggestions, don't hesitate to contact me directly – alli@hudl.com. That goes for any other pain points you may want to discuss. Our policy regarding #realtalk applies to former Hudlies, too.
