A decent place for entry level

Pros

I really liked the people I worked with. Most people were competent and hard working while still being friendly and interesting to talk to (that can make all the difference during the long days!). The benefits were pretty good (though I was disappointed when they switched to an inferior health insurance provider just before I left and also with the paltry transit subsidy). I was given excellent opportunities for professional growth, able to work on very interesting and societally relevant projects and was entrusted with a lot of responsibility after just a year (there and out of college). Note though that such things varied widely across practices (I was in the climate group) and managers. All in all, a steady job, decent compensation (though they could do better there) and interesting work. Not somewhere I wanted to stay forever, but it was a good first job experience and prepared me well for my next job.

Cons

Of course, as a consulting firm, billable hours are key. It seemed that to gain recognition you had to work ridiculous hours. The quality of work was a minor factor (if one at all), what really mattered - how many hours you billed. This can be frustrating for competent, efficient workers who value a true work life balance. Also, opportunities for advancement (i.e., promotions) seemed inflexible. Even if you were successfully managing responsibilities far beyond those of your position, if you didn't have x number of years in, you "couldn't" get promoted. Finally, it seemed like the practices were reorganized every six months. This was confusing and did not improve operations (how could it if you were constantly relearning how things were supposed to work).

Pros

The only good thing I can say is that the hiring process was very quick and they were eager to get me in the door and started with work.

Cons

Career advancement is non-existent Managers are terrible communicators about direction of the project and how it affects the team Managers have zero people-skills and have no business being in charge of leading a team Feel a sense that the managers don't want to bother having to train new people so they don't help employees advance their career or learn about new opportunities. Get a sense that the managers do not trust employees with important tasks and only delegate mundane and menial tasks to employees

Pros

Opportunity to work with top notch experts in many fields that support the public good (e.g. social, environmental/green, health, etc.). Innovative, multidisciplinary teams draw on experts from social science, research and evaluation, training, performance, tecfhnology, strategic communications, etc. to help clients solve problems. The work is interesting!

Cons

Low pay, lack of work/life balance, managers are promoted for technical or domain knowledge but do not necessarily have people management skills. There is little emphasis on developing, mentoring, or supporting staff; they are mostly left on their own. Staff with more aggressive personalities are more likely to succeed. Also, ICF has grown faster than its IT systems and knowledge management can keep up. It has essentially outgrown its smaller company processes and systems, and is struggling with knowledge sharing, collaboration, and other organizational effectiveness challenges. Finally, there is a lack of financial incentive for high performance. Employees can excell in every area and still get a negligible raise (barely above COLA). This includes managers. Quarterly bonuses are low and go to very few staff. Only the senior staff who work on proposals can get higher bonuses. It sends the message that only business developoment is valued.
