Pros

Working remotely was the only benefit during this role

Cons

There are so many but I will list two which is lack of resources to help your succeed. Being extremely overwhelmed by highly time sensitive deliverables that isn’t feasible for a 8 hour working day. Also not being valued for all the work Program Associates do for their practiceS. Workplace culture is very poor and there is a lot bulling which makes it a difficult space for PA’s to work confidently and feel supported. LASTLY the compensation is definitely not enough to live in the DMV

Dear Former IREXer, We are not happy to learn that you did not feel you had the resources you needed to better succeed in your position. IREX does greatly value the work of the junior staff and fully recognizes that the progress and accomplishments we make would not be possible without them. We take workplace culture and team dynamics very seriously and were saddened that you felt bullied by your colleagues. We would appreciate if you could please contact us to discuss your experience. Regarding compensation, we recognize that the DMV is expensive, although staffing budgets are determined by our donors, we conduct periodic surveys and salary adjustments to ensure that our salary ranges are aligned with those in our sector. We appreciate your feedback as well as your advice to management and will continue to address the issues you mentioned regarding feeling overworked and burnt out. We do hold sessions facilitated by our employee assistance program provider regarding work/life balance but also acknowledge that staff appreciation and stress can be more directly addressed by managers of junior staff. It is in our 2025 strategy to increase staff retention and decrease the turnover rate, so we will take your experience into account as we continue to prioritize those goals. All the best, The HR Team

Pros

IREX is a great organization to work for if you're passionate about program development. Their programs span a wide range of interests. The people who work there are passionate, dedicated, and friendly.

Cons

Like any international development agency, you will be expected to put in a ton of work, which is worth it if you're not overtime exempt. There can be some lack of communicate between management and projects don't always seem to be done in the most efficient ways. They don't seem to promote people unless you give them are reason to (i.e. "I have another job offer")

Great CEO, other senior staff not so much

Pros

Some room for growth. IREX is growing rapidly, which is making more room for junior staff to explore different options. There's a friendly atmosphere, and employees are fun and active.

Cons

- Mid-level staff overworked and under-appreciated - Senior management micro-manages too much - There's no standard procedures, processes are inherited, and each team has their own way of doing things... big learning curve for new staff - HR staff unresponsive and uncaring
