Toxic leadership

Pros

The company has good perks, like gym and happy hours.

Cons

Senior Directors talked bad about VPs and directors talk bad about their leaders especially in manufacturing operations talk bad about their bosses and so does associate directors. I agree with the reviews where it is said, promotions are based on if you are in the boys club, and if the senior leadership likes you, not on merit. Women are told to be not aggressive. Associate director’s take credit for their teams work and never mention the actual people who did the work or give them recognition. People come to company inspired and within few months, they get demoralized by toxic leadership. Senior Leaders tend to blame others, and enable the culture of blaming and toxic environment. Senior director’s alter the policies to make their number look good but make people suffer. Senior leadership should stop putting their beliefs on company policy. Stick to policy. Leaders who care are leaving. HR supports only specific leaders.

Pros

1. Company sponsored happy hours (beer/wine/food) 2. Flexible work schedule and ability to work remote 3. Nice and progressive campus 4. Gym on campus 5. Offers electric car charging stations to employees 6. Amphitheater on campus (not many people can say they have that on campus)

Cons

1. Climbing corporate ladder means making 'friends' with right people instead of actual merit or ability to perform job 2. Rampant 'boys club' mentality with very little women at higher management positions or even given opportunity for them (decisions are made behind closed doors) 3. If you don't get promoted you can always apply for a higher position culture vs. actually earning through merit 4. Director level titles are given out like candy to people who don't actually deserve or know how to do the job 5. Some HR personnel should be taken to HR for being biased and partial to a party's side 6. Company is still very wasteful and very 'ungreen' with respect to Manufacturing and packaging given to our customers, we throw so much away in the trash that ends up taking up our precious and limited landfill space 7. Building and campus improvements are not well thought out where we undo or redo what we did and vice versa 8. Constant desk movements are a waste of money and bring inefficiencies based on where you are located, so that you spend part of your day in transit between meetings that are in different buildings and in the end missing part of the meetings because you're late

Pros

Working with some of the smartest scientists in the world.

Cons

I've been at Illumina for a few years now. What I've noticed is that in the past year or so, the culture has gotten to be very negative. There are a number of people with anger management issues who continue to antagonize and disrespect employees including myself. HR doesn't really seem to care. We also just found that we won't be getting a bonus. There's also a lot more competition in genomics and a lot of my friends are thinking of leaving because the pay is better elsewhere and because they've reached their ceiling at Illumina. Illumina also does not seem to have a vision for what it wants to be.
