Rock bottom?

Pros

Great product, nice building, free food and good healthcare.

Cons

Management is going to be the ultimate down fall of Illumio. There is definitely a “boys club” mentality where all the managers hire friends and old coworkers and because they do that, there’s a lot of favoritism. Management has no empathy and because of that, so many people that have left were very mistreated and the people that are here are still mistreated. Their check up on you is just so that they can tell HR that they did, not because they really care. Everything that is told to us is very sugar coated and scripted so we never really know what’s going on. In a matter of eight months the culture of this company has become toxic. No one is willing to help each other due to the fact that they’re worried about their own employment. This place has become depressing, and no one really wants to come in. I wonder if this is rock bottom or if there’s still a ways to go.

Given your concerns that everything is "sugar coated and scripted", I’ll be as direct and forthright as you know I usually am. Over the 6+ years of Illumio's existence, we have probably been 3 different companies in order to to get to where we are today. We’ve grown a lot, we are still learning, with our team, and we are still running to the challenges of creating a company. As I said in a previous response, we are launching a regular 360' feedback cycle that our entire team will go through—including all of our execs - that's happening right now. This means that if a manager “doesn’t really care” or “people are mistreated,” the structure is now in place to make sure that information is visible at all levels and I can assure you it will get the attention it needs. If you are still on the team, I hope you are seeing the continued progress we are making to become the best company possible and a place where you can develop and feel supported. - Scott

Pros

If you enjoy the challenges of being in a startup which requires determination, a high degree of self starter attitude & being adaptable to fast changes, then this is the place to be at! It rewards you with the satisfaction of being able to truly make a difference and experience it first hand.

Cons

Uncertainties & fast paced changes will truly test the limit of the person taking up any role at illumio. I don’t personally see this as a con but more of a question for the individual on whether he/she is up to the challenge.

It’s great to hear comments like these from one of our teammates in Singapore. As you noted, our progress as a company is rapid and the challenges do require adaptability and a strong desire to make an impact on the world around us. As a member of our team who is outside of HQ, we hope that you’ll feel empowered to provide feedback through internal channels letting us know how we are doing on communicating “fast and wide”. Hopefully you’re experiencing some of the benefits of the new internal communication programs we’ve rolled out this year, we want to hear from you and the rest of the team! Feel free to jump on a channel to give and receive information and get connected with someone who can get you the updates that you’re looking for or DM me, you can always go on my #AMA channel! Thanks again for all that you are achieving in Singapore and APAC, whoever you are! - Scott

Pros

No pros of working at this company beware. If you have any other opportunity take it and I do mean any

Cons

Awful management team at every level. Zero transparency bad decisions made and employees are so low on the totem pole if they’re on the pole at all

I am truly sorry that you felt this way and wish you the best in your career. Illumio values it employees greatly, tries to find the right work-life balance for a growing company, and seeks to give its employees as much autonomy as possible, because that is the way a company scales and grows. About the concern you raised about employees being so low on the totem pole, in this year’s Best Places to Work survey, more than 4/5th of employees gave favorable responses to the question of whether Illumio’s leaders valued people as the most important resource. In no way are we satisfied with that, and I wish that you had brought your concerns up to me directly. To make sure that everyone can give and get feedback regularly, this month we are rolling out a more formal feedback process. Ben Verghese VP of Engineering
