Pros

Working with leaders in various fields has been a great growth and learning experience. And, working with bright students with fresh ideas has been wonderful. Additionally, my position was very flexible when dealing with time-off for home/family/health issues.

Cons

Support staff turnover seemed to be high. So, things like travel arrangements for conferences, etc. end up best being done by yourself, even though this takes away from your time to do useful research. This is not a criticism of IU specifically, but of academia in general: The amount of time spent writing proposals to get funding seems disproportionate to the benefit.

Pros

The best reasons to work at IUPUI are the people I work with are great and the environment is very laid back. When I come into work, my lab mates greet me happily and are ready to work to solve the problems necessary to achieve our current goals. We are able to make our own schedule which is great because it allows us to come and go as we please as long as we get our work done and attend the weekly meetings.

Cons

The downsides of working at IUPUI are that sometimes you can not get management to work with you or provide enough attention for your needs.

Pros

Interesting colleagues and good facilities. Reasonable work/life balance. Once you have a job you can usually work it as long as you want; job security is pretty good. The town of Bloomington is dynamic and a good place for a young family.

Cons

Advancement is very difficult. Positions are stratified and there's not much room for growth. The University dominates the town and community and so it tends to be arrogant in its dealings with staff; people have few alternatives if you want to remain in Bloomington. Compensation, unless you're working at the highest administrative or academic levels, does not seem to be very competitive.
