Best company I've worked for

Pros

I've worked at Intercom for 2.5 years and I can say this is the first and only job I've ever really loved. I'm inspired every day by the people I work with and for, and have a great team. While I can speak for other teams and orgs, I can say that in my experience, I've had great career opportunities (promoted 2x since I've joined), feel like my comp has been more than fair compared to my peers and other companies I've worked at, and am thankful for all the generous benefits I receive here. I'm also very excited about what the future holds for Intercom, it's a great product with some smart people behind it.

Cons

Things can change really quickly and there isn't super clear/aligned communication around these changes all the time. I think that leadership could do a better job being more transparent and flexible in communicating with Intercomrades who have a negative perception of things. Honestly this company feels like it's in its 'awkward high school phase' right now, but I'm personally confident we'll grow out of it and get better at these things.

Thanks for your kind words. This is exactly the type of experience we hope to offer. I agree that better communication is needed. This is top of mind for me and an area that I hope improves in the near term.

Tons of opportunity to learn and work with smart people

Pros

I've been at Intercom for nearly 3 years, and am still learning everyday. The company's rapid growth has its downsides, but it's also a great opportunity to build skills and gain a ton of experience. You also get to work with some truly amazing smart people, solve interesting problems and do great work that you can be proud of. We have a great product and brand reputation, and the company has a clear vision and strategy. The leadership team clearly care about the company and the people who work for it. My time here has definitely been the most interesting and best growth experience in my career so far.

Cons

Intercom has changed a lot in the time I've been here, and is suffering from some of the usual pains that come from growing from a 150-odd person startup to a 650+ sized business with many more different teams. Some teams/areas have definitely felt the pain of this more than others - especially areas with more inexperienced managers - but generally I feel confident that the company is going in the right direction. The leadership team acknowledge and actively work to address issues as they come up. They ask for feedback from employees regularly, and take it seriously. The culture isn't going to be for everybody. It's fast paced, can be intense at times, and requires you to be flexible and adapt as things change. Standards are high. That doesn't mean it's a cut-throat, work-16-hours-a-day, everyone out for themselves culture though - it's still friendly and supportive. The exec team is still very involved in some day-to-day decisions and in the details, which can be challenging and frustrating at times.

Thank you! Great advice to management. We’re growing fast but it’s important our hiring standards are never compromised. As you’ve pointed out, our bar is high, it’s one of our values, and key to how we think about our growth.

False promises, toxic culture and little organization

Pros

There are some really great people at Intercom and some teams doing really great work.

Cons

First and foremost the biggest issue is gender inequality. I regularly witnessed women get talked over or be completely ignored in meetings and left in the shadows of loud, pretentious men who are good at managing up. I consistently noticed that women were rarely present in leadership reviews I took part in. Middle management is inexperienced or non existent in most cases, while leadership micro manages and blocks many projects from shipping on time, if at all. Many late nights of wasted work happen purely based off personal disinterest in the work with no actual constructive feedback. To top it all off there is no real process in place and cross functional communication is terrible. Everyone wants to blame everyone else and is looking for someone to point the finger at rather than working together to solve the problem. If you have a manager that you can be friends with, you’ll be fine, if not you’ll likely get caught up in the chaos, blocked on projects and passed up for growth opportunity. “We are not a perks company” is regularly messaged yet the salary is far below competitors. Offering benefits to your employees isn’t a bad thing and you can do it without going overboard. It doesn’t help that the “unlimited vacation” policy isn’t actually respected and will quickly be held against you if they need a reason to knock on your performance. It’s a shame things have gotten as bad as they have because the product and brand have a lot of potential. But when you only invest in certain people you’re not going to accomplish much in the long term.

Reading this is really hard. I am sorry that this was your personal experience at Intercom. Making sure every employee feels empowered to the best work of their careers is our top priority. For many employees at Intercom I think they would share that they are doing truly impactful work and helping to build something special. That said, like all company's there are areas we can improve. Thanks for the honest feedback.
