Pros

• Learning and Development: I started at Intercom less than 1 year ago and from my very first day my manager was prioritizing my growth on our team. I have quickly picked up responsibilities outside the normal scope of my role, which has led to a promotion within my first 7 months! We focus on both my professional and personal growth, including developing my soft skills. I’ve been able to own multiple projects, implement new tools and processes, and work on things that really interested me. • Management: The management style at Intercom (at least in my experience) is very hands off, in a good way. My manager really trusts me to get my work done but is still accessible and open to giving direction when necessary. I’m always working on at least one stretch project outside of the scope of work I’ve done in the past and I love how encouraging and helpful my manager is while still giving me the room to make decisions and mistakes. I really appreciate that my manager has constructive feedback for me every week during our 1 on 1’s. • Intercom: I absolutely love how inclusive and encouraging Intercom is. It really feels like everyone cares about the wellbeing of the employees, starting at the executive team and trickling down to every individual contributor. The benefits are great (pretty standard tech benefits) but it’s really how much Intercom cares about us that really takes the company above and beyond. A great example was giving the entire company a week off over the summer and going as far as encouraging us to not check our emails, slack, etc. Intercom is a great place to work if you’re looking for a company that cares about your mental health!

Cons

My only real criticism is the SF office culture which I think can sometimes be cold and cliquish. Our weekly Happy Hours are late on a Friday afternoon which makes it hard for people with families or people with long commutes to attend. Also, many teams here keep to themselves and I’d love to see more openness across the organization.

Thank you. There is definitely a bunch we can improve about the way we relate to each other in the SF office. (And our other offices.) I'm sorry that it feels cliquey to you. That's no good. I personally would love to see people across teams mix and connect a lot more. My team have been discussing that for a while. We will get there. I promise.

Pros

1) I get to work with really smart people, challenge myself and learn a lot. 2) The culture is very down to earth and understated. 3) Intercom is very transparent about company performance and strategy. Generally information is shared freely and widely

Cons

As a young company they are still figuring out some company processes which requires you to be comfortable with ambiguity and taking your own initiative. For example, the career development and mentoring available are still pretty basic so I need to be proactive/self-directed about this.

100%. We are absolutely still figuring out so much of how we want to work. There is still some mess. Thank you for working hard through it. <3

Pros

Competitive benefits Conveniently located office "Cool" culture Insane amount of snacks/kitchen Free lunches Lots of Events

Cons

CEO is aggressive and controlling about every detail so teams are unable to produce results High churn. Quality candidates realize the dysfunction within 90 days and leave Lack of career road map, threatening tactics to "motivate" employees by reminding them they can be fired at any time No training, no company education, expected to "get it" instantly because you're being paid for it. Long hours, pretty much plan on a 12 hour day as the usual Lack of transparency throughout the organization. Don't be swayed by all the food & drink and events - there are real red flags here.

To whoever wrote this: From the bottom of my heart, I am so sorry for all and any way that we and I failed you. I wish you the very best in your career and in your life. And I hope that you will some day feel better about your time at Intercom. I am willing to talk and meet with you any time you want. You have my email address. <3 To anyone considering talking to us about a position at Intercom: Please know that I am so deeply passionate about our goal to create a truly human company. A company that shows its employees love and respect, and invests in their growth such that they leave here with substantially more opportunities available to them than when they started, with happy, fun stories about their time here. I believe we have a real shot at doing something very, very special. This person is clearly extremely upset, and they are entitled to their opinion, but the vast majority of this post is simply untrue. Three quick examples: 1. "Quality candidates realize the dysfunction within 90 days and leave." I don't believe there is a single person out of the hundreds of people we've hired who's left within 90 days of their start date. I can think of one person who left after 5 months about a year ago. 2. "Long hours … plan on a 12 hour day as the usual." I leave the office at about 6pm nearly every day. When I do, there are about 20 out of 140 people in the SF office still here, mostly eating dinner. I'm proud of our mature approach to balancing work and life. 3. "Threatening tactics … reminding them they can be fired at any time." This is a really mean and hurtful thing to suggest. We would never do this. It's simply not how Intercom works. We're imperfect in a million ways, but we're not dumb and we're far kinder than this. If you are interested in learning more about Intercom, please talk to anyone who works here. Right now is a particularly exciting time to join. We have positions available in every department. Eoghan eoghan@intercom.com
