Pros

Generous employee discounts, previews to upcoming products/marketing schemes, generous 100% discount on a few items to "wear to work" after 60 days of employment, the company prefers to assist customers and make sure they are comfortable, the sales commission is low (5%), the company does not put a high amount of pressure on associates to make a sale, but rather to insure the customer has an enjoyable experience. Sales associates are not expected to be "security" or confront anyone for loss prevention. A manager is always on-site.

Cons

The health plan for part-time was cut; almost all of J. Crew's associates are part-time so this impacts a lot of people. Very few stores offer full-time positions. Some stores have outdated computers, which have frequent crashes. Parking is not validated or compensated for workers.

Pros

Management really wants associates to become acclimated with the specific location, and climate of the company. Associates are given a level of training and autonomy rarely seen in retail. Great opportunity to create a client list and/or experience if one plans on parlaying J.Crew position into a career as a personal shopper at upscale retail establishments.

Cons

Commission-based sales can create a highly competitive and at times tense work environment. The clientele is accustomed to a very hands-on, customer-centric shopping experience, and can be quite demanding and rude.

Pros

Every store has its own personality. I was very lucky to work in a very supportive store, where teamwork was paramount, however, our store management received little, if no support from above. This made communication of policies and procedures very sporadic and haphazard.

Cons

Working "outside of the box" is difficult. Given the current state of retail, the ability to provide superior customer service can be compromised by lack of staff.
