Pros

Your average work schedule Mon-Fri 7am-5pm, occasional Saturday and Sunday (Unless you are unable to work those hours)

Cons

You are NOT a Visual Merchandiser. You are also a Sales associate, and Merchandiser. This job title means you ONLY work on mannequins, assembling or dismantling visual displays in windows or in-store, carrying out 'comp (comparison) shops' to maintain awareness of other retailers' visual merchandising concepts. Not pricing, or standing behind a cash register, which they will make you do. Occasionally higher management will pull (Non-Visual Staff) to do your job. which means you will be in charge of cleaning up their mess.

Pros

I specifically applied here because I wanted to use my Interior Design background in the Custom Decorating department but was offered draperies until after the holidays, which has been one of the corner stones of Penney's forever. Both professionals and the average homeowner love their draperies department and I don't know how many times I spoke to people who had stories about someone having gotten stuff here and loved it. The majority of the employees were passionate and hard working and wanted to see the company turn it around, with quite a few being 10-20 year employees. The people I worked with were excellent at providing training support and would stop and help whenever possible. There was also a generous employee discount as well as numerous incentives to shop including extra discount days and freebies.

Cons

I felt there was a lot of bait and switch happening from the minute I had accepted my job offer. They dangled a different position to get me in the door and then put it off until after the holiday season and it turned out the position was never an option when I spoke to the head of Custom Dec. I was very specific about my hours of availability during the week due to family and other work constraints and was constantly scheduled when I couldn't work and had to wait until the last minute to find out if changes had been made. Because of recent changes in company management, there were new policies constantly rolling out and customers tended to be angry over the progressive sales (which forced them to spend more money to get discounts) as well as coupons not working on anything kitchen or clearance. Often the POS systems would go down and management did nothing to get them repaired in a timely fashion, which is a nightmare during the holidays and tended to not be apologetic to the customers when long waits for assistance resulted. At the end of the season, I was let go with no real reason given except that they couldn't keep the new hires but they kept on a girl in the same department who missed work often, took excessive breaks, had a more restrictive schedule, and wasn't experienced in the least so I suspect it was due to money because I was more experienced and made almost $2 more hourly than she did.
