Pros

good salary, benefits, opportunities for advancement, finally starting to implement some meaningful DEI initiatives.

Cons

Lots of arbitrary punishment for students, high turnover, constant curricular changes with no teacher input, focus is all compliance (uniform, quiet hallways, etc.) and little else. They are all about quick fixes rather than looking at systemic issues within the organization. In place of a teaching philosophy, they have a brand strategy. They don't seem to see the connection between quality of instruction and behavior of students. I received very little development. I had more teaching experience than my "coach" who never even taught the content they were coaching. They pay is pretty good (for a teacher lol) but not worth the amount your will suffer working for this place. Culture is toxic, everyone is miserable. They make you stay till 5:30 most days, but when you walk the halls, no one is actually working, most teachers are just gossiping about administration in their classrooms.

Prepare to be bullied and hazed

Pros

Higher pay than other local charters

Cons

In spite of the higher pay, keep in mind that this is relative only to other local charters and is STILL low. Kipp has a very cult-like culture given that it was constructed by TFA alumni. In DC specifically, prepare to deal with principals from previous years (who no longer work for these schools) anxiously hovering over new and prospective staff to ensure that their toxic legacy never dissipates. Prepare to be bullied (sometimes silently) into having to lie about your future plans. Prepare to be gossiped about by fake recruiters. Prepare to deal with hazing and predatory practices that would be frowned upon elsewhere but are encouraged in this type of environment. Prepare to lose any concept of a work/ life balance while being tricked into thinking you’re actually helping to improve kids’ long term outcomes. Prepare to deal with self righteous folks who will seize your time as if you are being adequately compensated. Prepare to reach the profound realization that you can do more with your life and more to benefit students, their families and their communities elsewhere.
