Pros

Good salary and there are other teachers there that genuinely care about the kids. That's about it.

Cons

1. Threats from students are not taken seriously. There were numerous teachers this past year that were injured in fights and admin swept it under the rug 2. Admin is of no help so if you take this position as a teacher, please know that all of your help will come from other teachers. 3. Despite the "family" culture, there is rampant gossip and a twisted hierarchy. The culture team is the ones who are really in charge. They can do what they want and even have a say if you get promoted or non-renewed. 4. If you don't fit in (i.e. if you don't talk much or get sensory overload) or genuinely care about the kids but also want to respect your own work-life balance and mental health, you will be punished for it. So diversity and inclusion is a joke here.

Pros

Lots of days off. Lots of perks (swag, team outings, they generally feed you at events/meetings). No dress code.

Cons

They don't believe in truancy or implement any attendance policy, so student attendance is very poor. They do not abide by many of the basic state guidelines for school operation. Teachers are forced to give passing grades whether a student did the work or not. Students are passed on without meeting minimum attendance or grade requirements. Students are often put out on long-term suspension (30-90 days) for infractions that would receive a 10 day suspension in other schools. Teachers are often injured breaking up fights because hiring security is not in the budget. Poor communication between school staff. Poor communication parents and poor student engagement. Poor staff retention. Women of color are often given unrealistic expectations with 0 training or guidance to set them up to fail.

Pros

They’re so disorganized you can really coast through the job. Very few structures to holding anyone (student, teacher, parent, or administrator) accountable in that place. Free swag (bookbags, jackets, notebooks), free lunches. The staff is predominantly people of color. Higher pay than public schools but I hear they’re lowering that for the new comers now.

Cons

Very disorganized. They’re more worried about foolish meetings, starting new initiatives every other month, and sending out emails that the real work necessary for the children is not being done. KIPP Miami opened 3 schools in Florida without developing a curriculum geared towards the students in the Florida schools, nor one that targets what students will be tested on for the FSA exams. They tried to copy and paste the New Jersey curriculum and that was a fail so they then tried to get teachers to build a curriculum on their own. No true disciplinary structures, so kids are not held accountable since there are no consequences. Good luck behavior managing if you’re a new teacher. You’ll have to stick it out through a year or two of disrespect before the children respect you and you can get through a lesson, at least this is for the middle school kids. They treat the school like trash. The classrooms are dirty. The floors got waxxed in maybe 3 of the classrooms, once, literally one time all year. And we were in person from October to June. Yet, they wouldn’t open the the water fountains for the children because of covid. BS! Your leadership team will be phoney because they tapped danced their way into their role and now they must continue their performance to keep their check. They messed up their finances so you’ll have to come out of pocket for materials and wait a month to be reimbursed. Don’t question, don’t try to offer suggestions, don’t in anyway try to shake the already shakey table or you will be a target.
