Pros

Good pay for a new social work graduate, good benefits

Cons

KVC does what it can with the resources it has. That being said, case loads are ridiculously high and this job sets you up for failure. In this role, you end up working well over 40 hrs a week but do not get paid for the extra hours. It was not uncommon for me to work 60 or more hours a week, only get paid for 40 hours, and still not be able to complete everything that was expected of me. I constantly had clients and foster families tell me I am failing them and honestly they were right. I was not given the resources or training to properly do this job and despite being a competent social worker with a degree, license, and good time management skills, I felt I was doing more harm than good in this role. My time off work was filled with dread and anxiety in anticipation of going back to work the next day. This job had a direct negative effect on my physical and mental health, and my marriage. My anxiety was so intense it affected my wife's mental health. My family was telling me to quit, my therapist was telling me to quit, my doctor told me to quit. The stress of this job is just too great.

Thanks for taking the time to share your perspective. As an organization led by social workers, therapists and other clinicians, it is heartbreaking and unacceptable that you experienced this kind of stress in your position. While many of our teams are adequately staffed, there are a few, particularly in rural areas, that have dealt with ongoing job vacancies which lead to high caseloads, burnout and turnover for the other people on the team. There is a complex situation going on right now in regards to the Kansas child welfare system which is contributing to these challenges. We encourage you to read about the bigger picture over at http://www.kvckansas.org/childwelfareinfographic Our HR team and directors/supervisors are working to fully staff every team and office so that employees are able to succeed and children and families get the quality services they deserve.

Pros

Pay is reasonable Training is extensive and paid The job itself is rewarding Staff are friendly and warm Insurance Lots of PTO for hospital staff (not for corporate or field staff)

Cons

Insurance was really expensive and takes like 8 weeks to start, the hospital itself wasn’t following osha regulations and lied to osha inspectors when they were reported (though they did have to go through some training and improve on some things, so this might have improved.) There is a serious lack of trust on the part of upper management. While you accrue a lot of PTO, it isn’t always easy to actually get time off. Getting called in was a regular occurrence (I personally put in 60-70 hours a week, regularly), and it can be nearly impossible to call in when you’re sick. Communication is expected from hourly staff, but not so much from corporate or upper management.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your experience. We’re glad to hear that you liked the work you were doing and found it rewarding. We’re committed to providing ongoing and the latest training to all employees as well as making KVC a great place to work. One way we’re doing that is by addressing the areas you mentioned. We are aware that employees have asked for more communication and support from the leadership team. We have hosted quarterly leadership development meetings for all supervisors to learn how to improve their management styles and offer more support to staff, initiated an employee newsletter to share news more frequently, offered Town Hall meetings to share updates and address questions from all staff, and have launched an employee rewards program to recognize and reward all employees. We’re focused on improving those areas and making sure each employee feels supported and valued at KVC. Thank you for your review and best wishes in your future!

Pros

KVC offers a great work environment with supportive staff and team members. Great relationships within the office keep everyone motivated to do great work. The work is also full-filling as you get to work with children and families achieve goals. KVC also offers flexible schedules, great benefits and PTO.

Cons

KVC is a non-profit organization that offers lower salaries for similar positions offered at a for-profit agency. KVC continues to work hard to address low salaries.
