Pros

Good pay for a new social work graduate, good benefits

Cons

KVC does what it can with the resources it has. That being said, case loads are ridiculously high and this job sets you up for failure. In this role, you end up working well over 40 hrs a week but do not get paid for the extra hours. It was not uncommon for me to work 60 or more hours a week, only get paid for 40 hours, and still not be able to complete everything that was expected of me. I constantly had clients and foster families tell me I am failing them and honestly they were right. I was not given the resources or training to properly do this job and despite being a competent social worker with a degree, license, and good time management skills, I felt I was doing more harm than good in this role. My time off work was filled with dread and anxiety in anticipation of going back to work the next day. This job had a direct negative effect on my physical and mental health, and my marriage. My anxiety was so intense it affected my wife's mental health. My family was telling me to quit, my therapist was telling me to quit, my doctor told me to quit. The stress of this job is just too great.

Thanks for taking the time to share your perspective. As an organization led by social workers, therapists and other clinicians, it is heartbreaking and unacceptable that you experienced this kind of stress in your position. While many of our teams are adequately staffed, there are a few, particularly in rural areas, that have dealt with ongoing job vacancies which lead to high caseloads, burnout and turnover for the other people on the team. There is a complex situation going on right now in regards to the Kansas child welfare system which is contributing to these challenges. We encourage you to read about the bigger picture over at http://www.kvckansas.org/childwelfareinfographic Our HR team and directors/supervisors are working to fully staff every team and office so that employees are able to succeed and children and families get the quality services they deserve.

Pros

KVC isn't a big company, so it doesn't take a lot of time to become familiar with all of the people working for KVC. We have a good sense of teamwork, because it takes everyone doing their job to keep a safe environment. There is affordable health insurance, paid time-off days, free meals sometimes, company events, overtime opportunities, chances to exercise while on the clock, and we can call-off for work anytime we cannot and/or should not go to work.

Cons

There is a high risk involved, especially at my current position of Counselor, for needing to put yourself in harms way and having to do dirty work e.g. I have been punched, kicked, spit on, bitten, pinched, screamed at, had to assist with routine hygiene, and had to put up with a lot of disrespect and ignorance.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We appreciate you calling out some of the positive benefits of working at KVC while also noting some ways we can improve. Safety is a top priority for KVC but maybe you have some suggestions on how we can do even better in this area? Since you are a current employee, please feel free to speak with your supervisor and other leaders on site. We need your ideas and suggestions to make KVC the best it can be. It's important that we keep you and the children and families we serve safe.

Pros

You can work lots of overtime. You can eat food with the kids and it's free.

Cons

There are a lot of cons to this position. First off, the position that was described to me during the interview, is completely different from the actual position. Basically you come to work not knowing if you'll get, bite, punched or your hair pulled. If you didn't have any of those things happen to you, then it's a good day. If you work in the hospital area it's never constant. One day you might be on one unit, the next day you are on a different unit. This makes it hard to build a strong team. Also there is no organization in where they place you. Also if you actually do your job then they expect more out of you. The supervisors play favorites and it's super evident.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. You've raised a lot of important topics and since you are a current employee, we encourage you to help make KVC an even stronger organization by reaching out to your on-site Human Resources manager. He can help elevate any concerns you have so that local leaders are aware, and he can also help champion ideas that will make KVC a great place to work. As you know from firsthand experience, providing direct care to children and teenagers at a psychiatric hospital is challenging work. That is the nature of the job regardless of employer or location. At KVC, we take several steps to help employees succeed in the behavioral health technician (BHT) role including providing a substantial amount of training and putting in place safety measures (for example, ensuring that employees who are helping a client that may be prone to aggressive behavior is accompanied by other employees, rather than alone with the client). Safety for both clients and employees is our goal and we will continue to pursue that. It sounds like we could be doing a better job of educating prospective employees about what is involved in the BHT role. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We hope you will continue to voice your concerns and ideas so that we can create solutions.
