      Great place to work

      Pros

      * When the product succeeds, we are directly helping very sick people -- oftentimes children * Very interesting product challenges and problem domain * Highly educated staff with a lot of research experience * Everyone is very willing to share their time and teach specialized concepts * Lots of opportunity to improve and optimize the existing technology * I really work well with most members of my immediate team * Good perks at the office (when a covid surge is not going on)

      Cons

      * Lots of management and documentation overhead * Still catching up on some basic things in the computation stack -- but things are improving a lot * Historically high turnover but getting better

      A company with a great mission and impact, going through its "teenage phase"

      Pros

      * a great underlying technology with long term potential * smart, mission-driven and caring people who want to help patients * open and transparent culture, not much politics or hidden agenda * the leadership at the top of technical verticals like software has a great vision, deep technology experience and very collaborative tone. they care about good engineering (team, processes and infrastructure) and product quality * good benefits * low turn over in functions like R&D and stable leadership (although it is fairly new) If you are passionate about your work making a direct and vital difference in people's lives (literally life or death situations) and enjoy working in a collaborative and open environment, Karius is a great place.

      Cons

      The company is in the puberty phase and going through some growing pains. there are some conflicting feelings what it wants to be when is a grown up. the new CEO has established some guidelines and a high level direction and added a few members to the leadership team, but there is still some ambiguity around what the strategic plan is, the logic behind it, and how to translate that to an coordinated corporate execution plan. The planning cycles take longer than expected and all of a sudden it is a rush to deliver which makes it challenging for technical functions like software to deliver on time and with proper amount of effort. The product roadmap is incomplete and focused on fragmented features rather than a holistic view of product fit into the long term strategy. The technology can power many use cases thru different implementations and the leaders seem to be still contemplating on the best path going forward. At IC levels, we have even less visibility into long term product roadmap and strategy. If you have worked in growing startups, you realize that this is not unusual, it is a fact of how many businesses grow. some people actually thrive in such an environment.

      People there are mostly very nice and easy to work with.

      Cons

      I get that Karius is a start up but some things could be more organized and communicated better.
