Pros

Excellent employee perks and onsite services such as banking, drycleaning, daycare. If young and just starting your career, there is definitely a lot of areas for horizontal movement within the company.

Cons

Very hierarchical - many in management positions refuse to correspond with those in positions they deem at a lower level then themselves. It takes several follow-up attempts to get answers from co-workers and other departments - most of the work day is filled with continuously following up with people when they do not respond. A good portion of those in management positions got there by just being with the company in it's infancy and as such, they do not have well developed management or people skills. They tend to low ball the compensation offers. Everyone I've spoken with has been told during the interview process that they are significantly overpaid, that the company doesn't pay that high for that particular position or that there isn;t enough money in the budget. They will cite the many perks and benefits, but keep in mind these onsite benefits are really so that you don't have a reason to leave the building during the day (hint: so you can work longer hours). Parking is horrible, although there is a shuttle bus service in the front of the building it only runs during certain hours. This is mostly a problem during inclement weather.

Pros

Kohl's is a nationally recognized company, but leadership at the local level seemed to be lacking. Benefit packages seem to be good.

Cons

Complete lack of training in specialty departments. Training for new employees at a new location was very poor to say the least. Training programs had practically no oversight and senior management really did not seem to care. It was just a "get out there and do it, we don't care how" attitude. Senior management called me at home frequently to criticize happenings while I was off duty.

Pros

I’ll preface this with different stores have different vibes/cultures so what I believe won’t be true for every store. I’ve been with Kohl’s for 3.5 years. I started out as just seasonal, but they asked me to stay on. I like working for the organization. My store has a nice culture. We have a very mixed group and everyone seems to get along and help each other out. I’ve had the opportunity to learn all positions. So any week I could have 3-4 different assignments. They have always been really good about giving me time off (I always ask ahead of time) and allowing me to flex my schedule.

Cons

The pay is below average for retail jobs in nearby locations. I hate that the most value you can have as an employee is to successfully push their high interest credit card. They have had 3 CEO’s in my time there. Each has made some pretty bad decisions as to how they want the company to run. They have eliminated some senior managers in the store hierarchy so now there’s supervisors and leads that are overwhelmed with too many responsibilities. In addition, the floor staff has been cut way down so that often there are only 1-2 people on the sales floor even on the busiest days.
