Pros

Junior engineers are nice to each other and work hard. Some production managers are easy to work with. Some engineering managers are good at managing, but still fall short by singling out people and berating them. Neutral: Career opportunities for engineers include production manager or technical manager of making production parts only, or you hold your starting role for 19 years.

Cons

The high-mix low-volume production processes utilize old equipment and are not exciting. Walk the halls and you will notice that the promotional information about the core products has not changed in years. Very few new products are developed because there is more security in legacy parts. Operators are not fairly compensated and process engineers are hired through a temp agency. Most of the technical information is intentionally hidden in the minds of the experienced, which you are expected to know but is never taught to you. In most cases you are told to go find out on your own and present data, mostly so you can be told you are wrong by senior management. Pay is not competitive. Raises are not awarded based on technical competence but instead given to those who spend more than ten hours/day and work late or weekends. Management is inflexible and has unrealistic expectations.

Pros

Easy to move up if you put into tremendous effort and support management philosophy. Highly diverse production, with new challenges everyday. If you make it to the staff level, there is good job security.

Cons

Management is extremely abrasive no matter your skill level, from bachelors to PhD. You will be expected to juggle more than what you are capable of and make it up in your hours worked. Processes are not exciting and most of the technical information is hidden in the minds of the experienced, which you are expected to know but is never taught to you. Pay is not competitive
