Lots of Nepotism

Pros

None. There are no pros to working at this place. It's a dead end.

Cons

There is a lot of nepotism. An executive hired his relative to be a programmer. That is all that needs to be said.

You are right; it pays to know someone at LIDP. Maybe a friend or family member was able to recommend to a friend or family member that an opportunity arose within our organization. Usually, people recommend applying for the job because they too love all the opportunities LIDP has to offer. We do however have standards and a clear hiring process. One must be qualified for the job, or in some cases be learning from an internship to gain the skills necessary to be a part of our organization. Friend, family, or an employee who has taken a job here must do the job successfully or find a position that is better suited for their abilities.

Pros

Work Environment - Quiet office space that offers focus and concentration. Schedule is flexible, but gets busier as more work comes in. Management is also flexible if any sort of emergency arises. Management / Co-workers - People who work here are friendly and like family. Everyone is willing to help one another when needed or asked. Meetings are held to keep track of everyone's duties, make suggestions, and introduce ideas. Many of the seasoned workers have years of experience and knowledge of the life insurance industry. The same people also worked on the original Administrator system for years. As an added bonus, the company enjoys spending the time connecting with their employees through planned events. Daily Work - Not a surprise here, the work day is mostly support of the new Titanium version of the Administrator. The system is designed to support a variety of life insurance products, and is very advanced. A great understanding of java programming is needed but is not required to learn the system if you are new to the company. There are people available to help me or to ask questions whenever I have one. Other stuff - I have spent 5 years of my career here, and have learned a great deal about programming in a work environment and of life insurance.

Cons

Work Environment - Rooms are very plain, decoration is recommended. Temperature of the rooms get cold during certain times of the year. The equipment is older and works well, however if a problem occurs it is fixed rather quickly. Daily Work - Trying to understand the Administrator system could take some time to understand, especially if you are new.

Pros

I've learned an incredible amount of software development skills from LIDP and feel grateful to work on a project that involves a new part of the system almost every week. I enjoy the challenge of translating projects from the COBOL system and then determining how to implement the code in Java, Spring, and Microsoft SQL Server. The translation is the easy part, but figuring out the testing documentation and debugging the code I've written is where it gets interesting. It's not always easy, but I've appreciated all the friendly support and collaboration I've received along the way. The company has greatly improved its processes for how projects are tested, tracked, and released since I began at LIDP. This has been critical in ensuring that no conflicts occur when multiple clients have different priorities, and it has helped prevent emergencies from arising. Communication with clients about project priorities has also improved, with more emphasis placed on doing projects right the first time instead of rushing them. As a result, there has been less stress, and I’m not working as many late nights and weekends. I also enjoy working full-time remote, and creating a flexible schedule for myself. The company offers great benefits with a 401K, health, dental, mental health counselling sessions with Nivati, WellHub, and many others.

Cons

Some of the estimates related to lines of code per sprint can be a bit ambitious, but I believe management understands that thorough testing and quality documentation are much more important. It's better to fall short of the quota than to rush the projects. Sometimes, striking a balance between writing as many lines of code as possible and providing thorough documentation can be tricky, because scope creep can occur on larger projects.
