Pros

So far my bosses have been rather hands off as long as I deliver desirable results. So I have some freedom to do things the way I want to and think about my steps critically. Compensation seems to be pretty competitive. I think management has been pretty generous with rewarding top performers with incentives, such as RSUs and additional cash bonus (on top of base bonus). These are nice ways to recognize hard work and top-notch performance.

Cons

Things move very fast and so do directions. So work can be really stressful and chaotic most of the time. Work-life balance is totally off. Very little mentoring from bosses and management. The promotion process is not transparent. Unless you really push for it, there is never really a conversation between an employer and the command chain to understand what one needs to do in order to move up to the next level. This is seriously frustrating. There is little recognition for technical excellence, which is often is the key to delivering outstanding process and products. Much more recognition is devoted to people who manage customers and market products. Not very fair!

Pros

The culture at LAM Research (Novellus before that) has always been positive for me and I have been there 5+ years. I like the 10 hour shifts and supervision has always treated us fairly and with respect. The present bonus, stock purchase and benefits programs at present are all things that I am happy about.

Cons

For whatever reason, upper management does not seem to appreciate or respect what we do in manufacturing. New employees are offered low-ball wages which are way out of line with market value. After that, promotions and raises are nearly non-existent. An above average yearly "merit" raise is 4%. Most get 2%. As a result, retention of employees, to management's surprise for some reason, is dismally low.
