Pros

I liked my coworkers and being at a county's only daily newspaper. Work/life balance wasn't too bad because you get a talking-to for going even 1 hour into overtime.

Cons

Management was horrible and absolutely inept; the publisher schmoozed the local business community and held certain political figures as essentially untouchable in the paper, while the editor didn't push back against this at all. The city the paper is based in is about 50% POC but the editor and publisher showed almost no interest in covering nonwhite communities except for crime stories, and in fact put a moratorium on covering systemic racism. Pay was roughly equivalent to working at the local Amazon plant, and health insurance alone was about 1/3 of a paycheck.

Pros

High pay rate for the area. Great bonus structure.

Cons

First off, the casual racism. Essentially, if you use AAVE in any capacity, you'll be deemed "too unprofessional," at least under new management. That's bad enough. But if you're still reading? Extremely obsessed with numbers. Perpetually understaffed. Extremely strict attendance policy that was not adjusted or slackened due to COVID, which led to high turnover when people were potentially exposed but couldn't see a doctor (no medical unless you're fulltime, and most employees are part timers). While all of this was at least partially true prior to the acquisition of Berkshire Hathaway's media division, there were perks and people that made the job enjoyable enough for what it was -- a well-paying part time gig in the call center industry. All the life and personality was drained away after the sale, though -- the focus strictly became numbers.
