If you aren't a 'yes man', brown noser, or minority then promotions, salary increases, are few and far between. With every promotion the level of responsibility added to compensation equates to a 10:1 ratio. Work load is not shared equally; good work is rewarded with more work to the point one can't keep up unless working 24/7. Vacation is adequate but you are heavily scrutinized when you attempt to take it and expected to work either twice as hard prior to, or afterwards, OR expected to work remotely while on vacation. Work over and above is never recognized or known by 99.9% of management because that would give the employee leverage when pay increases are assessed. Pay increase suggestions from benefits per individual is reallocated by departmental management and given as they see fit. So if one does not see eye to eye with one's manager then you're screwed. Regardless of doing one's job in superior fashion, management will find an incremental part of one's job that they don't do well and penalize them heavily even if everything else is done excellent or exceeds expectations. If one leaves the company and has an excellent work history the HR department will blackball that individual to any potential employer with negative feedback. Word of caution if you are departing, if you are told you may have any company property because you either worked hard on the project or they deem it to be scrap then know it is a trap!
