Pros

Set up in a way that your work is handled when you are gone for even just a couple days. I enjoy full time work from home. I used to really love this role but it has changed over the last 2 years.

Cons

Everything else. Micromanaged. Subjective system of reviewing policy decisions, which are inconsistent across managers completing the audits. These audits impact our end of year results and thus yearly raises. Raises never more than 1.5-2% anymore. There’s no legitimate dispute process. The one that was implemented, will reject your request with no feedback as to why it wasn’t accepted. Severely understaffed yet unwilling to hire additional help even if it’s temporary from other departments. Management no longer shows any trust in its employees. Has turned into a full blown call center. Toxic work environment. Threatening employees of 20+ years tenure to lose jobs over auditing process. No time to focus on role as a career, and feels simply like a job.

Pros

- Great work/life balance (except for being on call... see Cons) - I like the hybrid work arrangement (2 days per week in office) - Competitive pay and nice yearly bonus - Pension plan in addition to 401k matching - Boston office is convenient to public transit - Social hour in the office every Wednesday evening 4-6pm with free drinks, appetizers, and snacks (optional, stay for as long as you like) - Pretty good cafeteria, with other lunch places within walking distance of the office - Indoor bicycle parking and locker room with showers for bike commuters in the Boston office - Free access to LinkedIn Learning and Pluralsight online courses - 4 weeks FTO (combined vacation & sick time) per year at my level - Not much bureaucracy for such a big company

Cons

- I'm one of only 3 engineers in my group, so I'm on call 1/3 of the time - Not publicly traded, so no stock plan - My manager's manager made it very difficult to get promoted for people under him, unfortunately - They block personal email sites like Gmail on the work computers (to prevent phishing, they say), as well as Spotify (why?!) and random other websites. (Most major websites are allowed though.)
