Pros

Two weeks full-time paid training in their learning methods. Worthwhile approach to improving student literacy.

Cons

The space is cramped, with no airflow or openable Windows. Stuffy, stagnant, dismal feel. The inadequately sized office suite is dumpy and not well-maintained. There are constantly other clinicians racing around to try to keep up with the harried schedule (5 minutes prep time between each student, during which time you must check the ever-changing schedule in the tiny break room, locate the child you’re working with next on a tiny hand drawn map that also changes, find the child, and then the moment you sit down, be prepared to immediately launch into their tasks. You barely have time to review the day’s list of 5-15 min. language drills which are written in shorthand and require different materials and intricate steps, all to be done in precise order and completed within 55 minutes. This list changes every day, sometimes more than once a day it is updated. While working with the child, you are expected to be typing up specific feedback in google drive for management about the types of errors the student is making in each different task on the list, and completing various logs of what specific pages you read, etc and then also marking their attendance, all while making small talk with them to keep things lively. The timing is so rushed people are literally bumping into each other in the hallway esteem sessions because there’s not enough room to get around. It feels claustrophobic in the kitchen break room—only room for about 4 people to be in there at a time, with a staff of 25 or so onsite at all times. None of the clinicians smile or seem happy, everyone is just looking down, perhaps conserving their energy for the children. Some of them are very good with kids and doing a great job, but most seem depressed. The workspace itself feels toxic and many clinicians are sloppy and poorly groomed. Finally, the schedule changes every week and is emailed to you so you will not know which days or partial you are working until a couple days in advance. Also know you’re not going to be working 40 hours a week.

Pros

They do indeed help *some* students.

Cons

There are *way* too many customers (pardon me, "students") who are there even though Lindamood-Bell *knows* they can't help. For example, while I was working at the center, we had five students who were mentally retarded*. Every one of them had already spent 50 - 100 hours at Lindamood-Bell, their reading skills were completely maxed out, we (depending on the student/day) were either just wasting their time, or torturing them by forcing them to attempt higher-level reasoning they just were not capable of. I would also like to address a response below, because it is too absurd to let go (and I don't know if the person who left it can respond themselves). "We stand by the quality of our learning center instruction staff. Potential instructors undergo a rigorous screening and training process." (1) To start with, at my center we had multiple people who admitted they were "grandfathered" in and didn't believe they would pass the current "testing". (2) None of the adults in that office are doing anything that requires or even exercises their brains. That's why so many folks just stay there forever—they can't do anything else (the most senior Clinician at my center had been a career bus driver before she started doing LMB to make some extra money. (3) It's a basic, basic spelling test (and some of the words are made up) and a logic test that is notably easier than the SATs. "Rigorous screening"?? HAH! (4) For the 90% of customers (pardon, "students"), y'all see, it doesn't matter your average Clinician isn't the best and brightest—if you want, you can brag that almost all the people you hire are capable of reading and spelling at a four-grade level...it's the other 10% that make it so clear most of the people (at least in my office) weren't equipped to help a sophomore in high school with his math homework...because all they know how to do is ask students "what [they] are picturing for ______". Visualization can help overcome barriers with basic arithmetic, but Algebra isn't about "picturing". *I am not a doctor, but I am a certified teacher and behavioral therapist who grew up with an immediate family member whose IQ is below 55—I *do* know it when I see it. To be fair, it was also incredibly obvious to anyone with...brains? The Director even acknowledged it in private on multiple occasions.

Pros

Lindamood-Bell has some of the best programs for teaching reading and reading comprehension to students with learning disabilities. Being trained by Lindamood-Bell will give you better teaching skills in these areas than most credentialed special education teacher. The staff is made up intelligent people who are a pleasure to work with. Consultants test and track the student, and give you specific instructions, which change as the student progresses. This could be a good fit for a young person who lives at home. Those who express an interest can move up the ladder to higher level jobs.

Cons

Lindamood-Bell does not value employees. The company has a product (its programs) and staff is there simply to deliver the product. Employees are as replaceable as the cogs and wheels of a machine. A part-time employee has no guaranteed hours-- you may work 8 hours a day one week and three hours a day the next. You're given your schedule for the coming week on Friday, with the caveat that it could change at any time-- so Its hard to make plans even for your "free time." However, you must request time off two weeks in advance, and your request can be denied. Time off during the summer is not an option, and if you want time off at Christmas, you need to request in months in advance. The centers are open for business on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, and wanting family time is not a good enough reason to ask for those days off. Finally, the pay is abysmal--$20.00 an hour. The needs of Lindamood-Bell are paramont-- your needs are unimportant.
