Pros

2 week training with pay Higher than minimum wage pay Potential for benefits Great opportunity to gain experience working with kids 1 hour lunch Clinicians have good rapport Great opportunity to bond with students Academy focuses on guided lessons of McGraw-Hill online curriculum software Research backed program that often really works Can be very rewarding Great stepping stone to other jobs in education and tutoring Fast moving environment Promote from within Discount offered for services for family

Cons

Disorganized Lack of support from management on student issues and professional growth and development. Can have difficulty making sure a break is provided, occasionally resulting in missed breaks. While there is a missed break form, it is not widely advertised and discouraged. Constantly changing schedule, often abruptly Constantly short-staffed You will work over forty hours a week It's teaching in a school and reading intervention program for kids with disabilities without the supports and resources of an actual school Often takes students above it's capabilities to support and manage High staff turnover Difficult call-out policy with no extra staff built in the schedule for protection. Days with staff call-outs are hectic and difficult with stretched-thin staff. Few promotions available and with little support during those transitions Most staff does not have other education experience (specifically lacking in prior special ed experience) Mismanaged with managers having no or limited previous experience Very sterile feeling Exhausting

Pros

The kids and my peers.

Cons

Other than this being hell on Earth, it’s a fantastic position if you’re a glutton for punishment, passive aggressive management, and a hostile work environment. Not disgruntled, this is more cautionary than anything for potential applicants: If you take this position as a tutor, know that: 1) You will not only be a tutor, but you’ll also be expected to be a lunch lady, maid, office assistant, babysitter, behavioral analyst, scapegoat, and all around punching bag. For 14 dollars an hour. They’ll also ask you to take on other duties without any raise in pay. 2) Your reward for doing a good job will be a Kudos card. Also expect to be observed and critiqued as you are trying to teach your students at least 50% of the time. You as a tutor will be critiqued more than any student will. 3) You will know the kids better than anyone. They will become part of your life. Management sees them as dollar signs and sees you as disposable. 4) Management assumes ZERO responsibility for any internal problems. You will be overworked and underpaid. Even if you love working with the kids, this organization makes zero effort to listen to employee concerns. 5) Your marching orders will come from condescending people who give you zero direction. Expect to know everything about new lesson plans, new reward systems, or anything significant about a student in massive unorganized folders. Didn’t get to all of it during your 5 minute break? Don’t worry. Someone will interrupt your session and belittle you in front of your student to make sure you get it right next time. 6) Your weekly hourly meetings will go like this: 1) (55minutes) “All The Things We Never Told You That You Need To Be Doing” and 2) (5 minutes) Updates on the KIDS

Pros

It is kind of okay for temporary employment.

Cons

This was the most exhausting job I've ever had. In training, they make it seem like the kids you'll see are easy to work with, but realistically you might get one student a day without moderate to severe behavioral issues. I was NOT qualified to provide the type of care and attention that these kids require, nor did they offer any type of training in it. Aside from being exhausting for the "clinicians," it's not fair to these kids. The tutors are not given any heads-up about these students either. It's truly a trial by fire for both of you. It's devastating to watch them slip through the cracks. Even if the kids do not have emotional or behavioral needs, none of them are learning by their 4th hour. It feels like LMB's way to squeeze another billing hour out of families. When I found out how much LMB charges, I felt morally bankrupt. I'll always feel guilty for not quitting then, but at least I can say I won't be back. Parents could pay tutors twice what LMB pays us and be getting a more than 50% discount. I don't know where the money goes. Many of the books and materials in the centers are literally falling apart. There's no time to get to know anyone with non-existent breaks and lunch "hours". It felt intentionally designed. They squeezed every ounce of life and labor they could out of us. I've never been so depressed at a job. They treat the kids like coin purses. They treat the employees like necessary annoyances. They make you work on holidays and they have required overtime meetings. I never could take a full lunch hour or my "required" breaks because I was babysitting. I brought it up to a supervisor only to be told not to worry about it and that it wasn't my job, but also to make sure the kids are never left alone.
