Great people, terrible way to run a business

Pros

-The programs work for the kids. -Seeing parents’ faces when their child reads for the first time. -It's never boring. -The people in the centers truly care!

Cons

-Incredible mismanagement by corporate. Awful communication and tons of online meetings that are just vapid cheerleading. -Putting people who are not ready at all in higher positions, which just sets them up for failure. -Complete disconnect to how centers function day to day, which lead to decisions that make running a center more difficult. -A pay cut when everyone in the centers are already underpaid. This was never once addressed by the CEO or anyone in upper management, just communicated through an email. Then multiple additional responsibilities were ADDED to each role, so now employees are expected to work twice as hard for less money. -Incompetent people in corporate who probably got the job though friends (a lot of nepotism and favoritism in the upper echelons of the company) making costly errors and wasting money, which is the real cause of their poor financial year

Pros

The programs are amazing and worth learning. There are some fantastic people there that are truly a pleasure to work with. As a young professional, the professional development division gives you exposure to a huge range of responsibilities, settings, etc. that you rarely access so early in your career. They are truly committed to using their data to improve the programs and are very dynamic in that sense.

Cons

Weak senior management. They definitely struggle to balance their desire for integrity and improving student outcomes with business. The largest downside I saw was a lack of respect for teachers and school culture. I think it wrecked relationships over and over, with very little realism from the company and honest reflection about why and how that happened. While I laud their ability to use their data to improve their programs, I think that the same rule should be applied to improving their customer outreach and relationships.

Pros

- Most of the learners you meet are very sweet and cheeky - willing to learn if you put the effort in to motivate them the right way. - Some of the staff (especially the summer hires) are really friendly and will make the long days feel less painful. - You are given the opportunity to do a couple of additional training programs (Maths, scoring, testing). The testing can be lots of fun, as you get to be the first face a learner sees at LMB and can make or break their experience.

Cons

- Low level of pay for the quantity of work you do: although it is above minimum wage, you get no additional benefits and the wage is not worth the amount of stress you go through on a daily basis. - Inconsistent procedures: during the space of 3 weeks, a particular procedure was changed 4 times and employees were berated for getting it wrong when we hadn't been made aware of the change. Procedures for calling for assistance were never consistent. - Training is adequate for the type of work you do, but does not prepare you in any way for the types of behavioural challenges you'll encounter. You will meet learners who will hurt you, insult you, refuse to work, damage property with no consequences. When you call for support, you will be treated as though you are dumb for not being able to manage the behaviours, and will constantly be asked if you tried anything before calling for support (calling for support is a last resort: if you're calling, it means you already HAVE tried everything else) - Favouritism runs this place, not merit. Consultants and mentors are chosen based on who they're friends with, and the Associate Center Director is chosen because she is the Regional Manager's sister, despite having less experience than almost every other clinician. - Consultants carry an attitude of "I am better than you" and are not afraid to belittle you in front of learners. - There is no separate lunch area, so your lunch may be interrupted by students. Additionally, consultants eating in the same room will report everything you say back to management, and you will be called in for jokes at lunchtime taken out of context, complaining about anything, etc. You cannot express frustration without being told that you're creating a negative environment. - The attitude of 'customer is always right' very much applies here. The clinician is always at fault. Student didn't do all of their tasks? The clinician obviously didn't work hard enough. Student sits in a corner destroying property and refusing to work? Clinician hasn't bothered to motivate or build rapport. - There is NO progression. They only have a spot for one or two mentors, no spots for extra consultants unless current ones leave, so you will be stuck at the bottom of the totem pole for ages, regardless of your experience.
