Pros

Some of the co-workers are pleasant

Cons

Management is quite unsupportive of clinicians dealing with difficult students. There is a very distinct hierarchy, and if you're a clinician on the bottom, management treats you disrespectfully, like a child. Instead of discussing issues like adults, they scold and lecture. It is very demoralizing. The schedule is sporadic and even though it is made in advance, they change it on you without telling you, sometimes it changes from hour to hour. You may come in to work and they will cross off your schedule and when you ask they will tell you they don't have any work for you after all. They may call you in the morning and tell you even though you were scheduled to work, don't bother coming in. But if you want time off for a doctor's appointment, you must ask at least 2 weeks in advance, and even then they may not allow it. If you are sick, you have to call two different people and explain why you can't come in, and then they will decide if you can stay home sick or not. The director actually said, you don't have the right to time off, unless we decide you do. It's obvious why only college students work here.

Pros

-Fun to work with the kids 1-on-1 -Coworkers usually college-aged, fun to work with -Location is right in downtown, providing good lunch spots/ability to walk around during lunch -Weekly mentoring to help refine teaching skills/strategies

Cons

-Pay rate was low ($14/hr) considering parents pay $100+ per hour to send their kids there -Hours aren't guaranteed, they will put who they like on the schedule; if they do not like you, it appeared that they'd just wean you down to no hours -Will over-hire for the summer if they know they'll have 1-2 busy weeks; then people get less hours other weeks to make up for the over-hiring

Lots of work, very little pay

Pros

The job can be very rewarding. Clinicians actually make great things happen and students often make tremendous gains.

Cons

Clinicians are unappreciated and undervalued. Instruction costs $129 per hour and the clinicians, who provide the actual instruction, are paid a measly $15 per hour. It is a lot of work. One has to learn how to work with all different kinds of students with different kinds of diagnoses and struggles, but get paid very little. Hours can be very spotty before and after the summer. The main focus of each center and the company itself is to make money. Many clients are sold on signing up for more instruction when it is not necessary or will not help the student more than they already have.
